So what's the purpose of the strip for the wider rump exactly?
As they used the same back for the GTS and used the black material in its place it seems like a filler piece?

That was my logic as well. The same *** is on the GTS as the C4. Therefore, one would think the black bits running across the rear could be switched out for the light strip.

Aesthetics to differentiate the 4S and 4 GTS. The 4GTS also has the light strip. Should be interchangeable no issues I would assume.
Ignore the license plate frame, this was an old picture. I'm starting to dig the idea of swapping the black GTS center grill for a C4S one and deleting the PORSCHE letters altogether. Here's a quick photoshop:

SOLD!!! IMO, it looks like it was meant to be that way. Once the duck goes on, the black bits on the back get disconnected from the original rear engine cover. The light bar makes it look cohesive.

Its worse than that..if you spec the " C2 " GTS with the ducktail , the GTS's black engine cover is replaced with a " regular " three slat body colored one . So when you look down on the car, those thin black slats between the tail lights are really " lost in space " ! So unless you want to go thru after delivery monkey motion, from an esthetically harmonized standpoint it is best to skip the ducktail on " C2 " GTS but ok to order it on " C4 " GTS which keeos the red lightbar
( I apologize if you already mean to say that in post above )
