Default 2014 Porsche 991 PDK review (15 months)

It is my first automatic transmission car. I had read all of the reviews here.

<<It is a great street car in Agate Grey Metallic.

It has been the best car that I have ever owned. It's a 2014 911 Carrera with the PDK. It has the PDLS (light system), sunroof, sport exhaust, and PSS (14-way Sport Seats). It was $104K MSRP.

I have two race cars. I live near some of the best roads on the east coast (N. GA mtns). The car needs no modifications. It's well balanced, and the PDK is programmed for a racer. It will shift before I can shift. It glides through some serious mountain turns.

The sound system needs work. The BOSE@ audio is overrated.

Towards the end of one test drive sitting in traffic I decided to turn on the Bose. The sound that came out was bad enough I listened just long enough to be sure no amount of tweaking was ever going to get it anywhere but tolerable at best, and turned it off. Seriously, truly disappointing.

The one thing where PDK could really improve is to close the gap between normal and Sport Chrono launches. Right now it seems you can launch at warp speed with SC, or get going fairly fast without, but there is a big gap between the two. Or does this go away if you play with it long enough to figure out how to make it launch really fast without using SC?

I think the biggest "problem" with the PDK box is the amount of space btw 1st and 2nd gear. I'd like them stacked a little closer so you don't need to hold first out as long to make sure you've got the appropriate revs in 2nd to carry the torque in normal driving. Flat out isn't a problem, but just putting around when the car goes from 1-2 and sits at 2k rpm in second means you really have to lay on the throttle for build up.

I've never really noticed any 1>2 problem in the PDK.

The north GA mountains do not really require 1st gear. I think 2nd offers a nice gear to power out of the sharp turns.

They call them Gaps in GA when most guys would call them the peaks of the mountains. Most roads are smooth. There are a couple that have some bumps on the surface. The car works well either way.

Tx for your post. I'm in the middle of looking at a12-13 991 base Carrera as a DD and keeping the .2 Spyder for the weekends. It was so fun to get into a 911 again. The PDK shifted very well and there's enough power in the car to have some fun when you need it. I honestly never turned the radio on. I've never listen too much to the radio in any of my P-cars, always enjoyed the engine note Tell me about the Sport Exhaust. The two C's I am looking at, one - the 2013 with, the 2012 without. Do you use it?

Honestly, I don't use the sport exhaust system ($2950 in 2014) unless I am up in the gaps in the north GA mountains. I am very good with it and keep my Porsche cars for a long time.

My 2014 Agate Grey Metallic 911 is my daily driver. I have two race cars and a nice 1973 Porsche 911 RS Gemini Blue replica for weekend events (it's quick).

My 991.1 is still the best car that I have owned. The feel and performance is that good.

Have a 13 C4 with sport exhaust and love it. Get the one with, you will not regret it!

I also have a 2014 with PDK and would echo all the comments above. Also my first automatic transmission. My only issue with the car is an irritating resonance at 3,100 RPM where it sounds like something metallic is buzzing for a brief second. After 10 years of Porsches I know that our flat-6s make all kinds of lovely extraneous noises, but this should not be one of them. Other C2 owners have reported the same thing. No fix so far. Seems isolated to the 3.4L engine.

p.s. I could not afford the Sport Exhaust at time of purchase and wish I had it now.

I have read about this lower 3K "resonance", but I have not experienced it. My car is an early 2014 (....1068xx).

I was sold on the new 991.1 when the factory did a 7:40 on the Nordschleife
(14 seconds faster than the 997.2).

It was mostly due to weight savings on the body. It's just a better car.

I also have a 2014 911 with PDK and I'm disappointed with it from a functional point of view (not performance, it shifts great). The way PDK is laid out is a disgrace and Porsche should know better. First, it looks like a toyota, chevy etc shift mechanism and PRND sequence makes no sense in a car like this. Secondly, the forward/back movement is *** backwards and goes against the laws of physics.

Porsche needs to go test drive a BMW M3 with DCT and copy it. I've owned a couple m3's and I think BMW's solution is perfect. This is my first Porsche and I really like the car except for this. Honestly, I'll probably got back to the M3 when my lease is up next year (unless Porsche comes to its senses by 2017 MY).

OK, done venting

LOL, they call them gaps because they are, in fact, the lowest point between the peaks. Same as "passes" out west. These are the places the roads get built.

PRND is mandated by US DOT standards.

Wait… the government is telling Porsche how their shifter must be? How can they do that?!?!
