But I'll bet your parts were at least $3k of that $4,500. The base Carrera system has more parts and runs about $400 more, I believe. I'd be curious what your install cost was, if you know.

You know the PSE is simply a center muffler swap out, yes? Nothing else. The switch inside you do not need, the existing valves will control the sound baffling automatically. You do not need the console button over-ride.

You can buy the PSE center pipe for around $ 1,800 and if you have two jackstands and some very basic hand tools can install in under an hour. At the dealer, they quote it with removing the rear bumper cover because the Porsche manual says to do so. In reality, there is plenty of room to scoot the old one out and the new one in without doing that. I've installed two 991 S exhausts, they are not difficult and certainly don't require a dealer stamp of approval. If you were in Virginia I'd have you swing by my house and we'd pop it in easy as pie.

Here's a photo essay I did on installing my Tubi Exhaust, and it involved pulling and replacing the pair of side mufflers. But it will give you a photo essay on seeing how just the center is pulled.

But without the button, I have no ability to turn it on/off at low RPMs correct? Without the button, does it just stay closed at low RPMs or stay open?

On a standard 991S, the 'noise valves' operate as follows:

Engine Start: Open
Throttle to 3,600 rpm: Closed
3,600 rpm to redline: Open

All the console switch does is open the valves from beginning throttle to 3,600 rpm. If you want that, you need the button.

I could care less about that, so I wouldn't need the button, though if it's that easy to install, I'd expect them to do it. I'm checking with another local dealer today.

parts and labor for my X73 install at Griffen Autowerke in Berkeley cost me about $3200 total.

The labor for the X73 install is a lot because you have to drop the front subframe to install the front sway bar.

That labor doesn't surprise me all that much

FWIW, we quote 2 hours to install a center muffler bypass x-pipe. All be it, there are no lines to attach etc. I am not sure what is involved in making a car not equipped with PSE able to accept a PSE muffler/sport button etc but that quote seems high IMO.

But my quote, parts and labor would be $4,000+tax, so a bit higher than $3,200. I was expecting about $1500 in labor, so all in about where you were. Not $4k+.

Yeah, I was expecting a little more than that, but not $2k. Luckily somebody PM'd me a link to a thread on 6speedonline that indicates that you can buy just the individual parts you need much cheaper than the full kit and the install can be had much cheaper as well. Folks have done this conversion for under $2,500 all in, parts and labor. I have the parts list, I just need to get a reasonable quote for install somewhere in the Bay Area.

The X73 really does transform the 981 CS. And it's nice to have all factory parts.

I bought my parts though Griffen too. As that way they warranty the parts AND labor for a year or something.

Yeah, I've heard great things about the X73, but $4,200 is just too much for me for that mod. I love the car bone stock and it will get little track time, so it's just not worth it to me. $3k is my mental limit on that mod.

Sharkwerks are very capable - swapped out center and side mufflers without removing the rear bumper. I wasn't doing PSE, but was doing their side muffler delete pipes which also required putting an S center on my base.

Don't know about hooking up the button, but you could ask them. They may even have a more cost efficient solution if you are not interested in the button.

I'll have to say I like the button though for client situations or if late a night through the neighborhood (otherwise it is on all the time).

Not sure if you are South or North Bay, but I hear good things about Flintworks in Campbell (and they are a PCA GGR sponsor).

I've been told the opposite, i.e., without the button, it's off from idle to 3600 RPM and only opens on startup and above 3600, which would be fine with me.
