Thanks very much, flgfish for uploading the ISO. Having now burned it to a DVD, I'm hoping I'm on my way to resolving this cursed PCM rebooting issue.
Step two will be cloning my Porsche PCM hard drive to a new SSD, and then, step 3, installing the new SSD into the PCM unit and then, step 4, updating the software with the DVD disk.
I just got a 2014 Boxster S (981) with PCM 3.1 version 4.73 installed out of the factory.
I'm trying to install 4.76 from the ISO at the download link. The first installation attempt threw me into the Emergency Update mode. Now it gets to close to 100% completion, then "error copying files!". And then I get into the emergency update loop, with it failing at the same point constantly. The PCM isn't able to boot up at all.
How do I get out of this? I tried burning DVD+R and DVD-R discs at 4x speed, so it may not be the disc. Can I go back to a previous version? If so, where is it?
Make SURE to use Verbatim branded discs.... I tried with Maxell and some other brand and those did not work. Tried Verbatim (as stated elsewhere) and worked like a charm...
Just burned v4.76 and upgraded fine. I had to use a 4x DVD+RW Verbatim 4.7GB disc (part Verbatim#94520 1016-203) and burn at 4x rather than the other 16x newer ones that cause the security check errors as noted above.
Note after install I think it pays to do the 'Reset PCM Vehicle Handover' this also clears some other stuff and stops that "voltage warning shutdown" coming on if you turn ignition to on.
Thanks for supplying and maybe one day Porsche may enter the 21st century and allow update by USB
Going to burn a DVD-R tomorrow and try to update the P in my 2014 Panamera tomorrow. Does everyone do the Reset PCM Vehicle Handover after doing the update? Just checking if it's something I need to do (would rather not if unnecessary, just out of sheer laziness!).

Did you manage to get this sorted out? This sort of thing does worry me as I don't want to effectively "brick" the PCM

Did not do the "vehicle handover" - still have the navigation destination from original owner in the PCM and the update did just work perfectly. Make sure to follow the burning procedure (slow speed and verbatim disc) and you will be fine!
This is a summary of what I gathered when reading through this thread and debating about doing this update.
What version are you on now?
Pressing SOURCE and INFO together you can get the full readout of version number and history
From Homescreen > Set (Lower Right soft button on Footer) > Software Update > Version Information. It should all be in there....
What version can I go to?
You can't jump from 3.xx to 4.xx
How to burn the DVD and which files? VERBATIM DVD's, burned at slow speed. Burn all of the files without the folder that originally contained them.
How to load the files onto the car? Takes just a few minutes. Follow the on-screen prompts in your PCM after putting in the DVD. This will take you to 4.76. Nothing to do with the map.
I have 2015 991.1 Targa 4S with PCM3.1 - Version 4.52. Does anyone know what the differences are to 4.76? What would I gain with upgrade?
I had PCM 3.1 V4.52. To be able to get your phone hooked up to play bluetooth for music took approx 10 attempts. I took it back to Cridfords and they updated the PCM 3.1 V4.52 to V4.76. Now my phone connects Bluetooth everytime. I can play the radio through my phone or even my Spotify account. The quality is 10 times better than using the analogue radio station actually on the PCM3.1. It appears the V4.76 ironed out most of the bugs on lower software levels. I'm am very happy with the outcome. Porsche boxter 981s. 2014.
