Default 991 GTS Manual Transmission

I see most of GTS 991's on this forum are delivered with manuel gearbox.

Are you guys satisfied about this gearbox?

I also have a manual on order.

I love it. Very smooth and the gates are precise. A definite improvement over the 997 I had previously. The clutch pedal also engages closer to the floor board making gear changes a little faster. I have to say it's one of the best I've driven to date. You wont be disappointed.

My E92 M3 MT was a 7. Now I have the GTS MT - it's a 10. So now my M3 MT is a 5.

The only thig I don't love about the GTS MT is the gating for the 7speed is narrow and can still throw me off...when downshifting from 6th I usually want to get down into 3rd, but hit 5th instead about 10% of the time. But the shifts and transitions themselves are sublime! Love it.

Ramphaus a few questions: I had an e92 m3 prior to my 991. It was 6MT. When I test drove m3's they were only DCT and I ordered mine European Delivery - when I picked it up at the Welt and drove off, I was like oh **** this manual blows. It seemed the powertrain was much much better suited to the DCT. This was confirmed when we picked it up at the performance center and my track day was in a DCT car.

Fast forward to the 991S. I bought mine CPO so its PDK but I wanted another manual. Porsche manuals are supposed to be among the best and I've been able to test drive 2 7MT cars and they seemed to be matched to the powertrain just as good as the PDK - probably because they share the same (or very close to) gears. I've been on the fence with ordering a 7MT, either a GTS or a facelifted car (its so close to the facelift I would punch myself in the face if the new one was significantly faster or "better").

Soooo, since I derailed this -sorry OP - Ramphaus how do you like the 7MT matching up with the powertrain of the 991 vs the 6MT/DCT in the M3?

+1 also coming from an E90 6MT and have driven several E9X DCTs. Would be curious to hear other thoughts as well.

I got my GTS with manual and would do so again if re-ordering. I came out of an E92 M3 with the DCT and drove numerous E92s with manuals (friends' cars, rental sports car experience, etc).

The impressions above mimic mine. In the E92, the 6 speed didn't feel well matched with the V8, whereas the DCT really performed well. My main gripe with the DCT was that it got a little boring to me. It definitely helped me sort out steering inputs and smoothness on track days.

Fast forward to the 991, hands down I'm having more fun than I was in the M3. I think the majority of that is the car overall but the manual is only additive for me. Gear shifts are smooth and I really like the engagement point of the clutch. There is no rubbery feel to the shift linkage like in the M3.

I like the auto-blip for city driving in sport plus. For stop and go traffic if I am downshifting it ensures the ride stays smooth the entire time. When I'm driving more spirited, traction control comes off and hell toeing commences, best of both worlds IMHO.

Like above, I've also had a hard time finding 3rd vs. 6th when coming out of 7th. Its not the norm, but it is frustrating when you miss the gear.

My largest 7MT complaint is the hill hold feature. I've gotten used to it now, but it feels poorly executed when compared to the hill hold I've had on past cars. The 991's holds for so long that it caused me to stall the first 2 times I experienced it which was frustrating/not to mention embarrassing. Now I know it requires a little more gas than normally required to get through the hill hold.

One more point, gear ratios seem appropriate to me on the 7MT. North of 6k RPMs the engine really climbs fast. This seems like the bleeding edge of where I could drive a manual. I fully understand why the GT3, Turbo, 458, etc are all dual clutches. I know I couldn't keep up.

In summary, the 7MT in the 991 is perfectly mated to the engine for my taste. It gives me the manual experience I was looking for, pushes me to shift as fast as I can and definitely will remain a challenge for a long time as I get to know the car and master its dynamic ability.

The 7MT is perfect for the GTS IMO. It is fast, light, and accurate except when downshifting from 7th, where you have to be careful. But I find there is no need to use 7th unless you are on a long cruise. Overall, far superior to my 997.2. Watch the Getawayer review, I think he sums it up perfectly:

Really good information. Thanks to all who posted feedback.

I liked the manual in my 997.2, even though shifting in to first was sometimes balky. It sounds as though the current iteration of the 7MT is quite good. I was worried it would be notchy or awkward. The video from the post above and all of this information made it a no question choice for my GTS order.

So an imperfect 10 made a 7 a 5. Got it.

I found 5th a little hard to find at first, but now with 1500 kms on the odometer shifting feels more fluid both up and down the gears.

Prior to the GTS I was driving a C2S PDK - and with the paddles occasionally dropped into too low a gear at higher rpm, something I have not done with the 7-speed manual.

Do any of you with GTS 7MTs have experience with the non-GTS 991 7MTs? Is the GTS 7MT actually different from other 991s?

They have apparently reworked it and it's much crisper. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the non GTS 7MT. I'm looking forward to experiencing it for myself.
