switching a Ducktail for a standard rear spoiler
looking at a 991 with a ducktail. I like everything about the car except the ducktail. can I switch it for a standard spoiler that comes up at speed? cost?

Short answer yes!!
You can find used spoilers. Around $500
Add paint, install, new interior switch control module, dealer programming, etc..
Reassignment surgery you're in for about 2K

I realize its likely considered heresy here, but I agree with the OP - I'm not a fan of the ducktail either. But hey, that's why Porsche offers a bazillion options and styles...
To the OP, consider making the swap but don't bother with all the electronics, switches and actuators. You'll never see the spoiler activated anyway, and unless you're driving at 9/10 on the track, you won't notice a difference...

The rear spoiler is necessary to function for downforce. It automatically goes up at around 50/60 mph?? Around there. I have the duck and not sure.
Plus if anyone is putting on a duck, Porsche recommends the Sport Design front bumper with it for front aerodynamics. There's a lot of variables here at play.
Having all the electronics working and correct is good for you, your car, and at resale.
