I've seen many Porsche cars that are CPO'd show an accident on the carfax report - even some linked directly from the PCNA website.

Like mentioned... Cars with an accident CAN be a CPO! No more than 2 panels resprayed and NO structural damage. Resprayed bumpers are VERY common. Overall, if done well a repainted panel or bumper is no biggie in my opinion.

Unfortunately a resprayed panel on a 2 year old car is often not just a resprayed panel. To many "my kids bicycle" scratched the car. But only a PPI will reveal what was repaired. It would be a "biggie" to me and a fairly large number of people who might be shelling out $80-90K. A show stopper.

Is there a way to tell a skillfully done re-spray job? Would the surface be rougher compared to surround areas? Would the paint look "fresher"? anything else?

Other than paint thickness no. If they are that good with a match, it can look quite perfect. No "fresher" and definitely not rough.

They whole point with a high skilled painter is to make it look factory which is fine. If I bought a used 991 with a ton of chips on the bumper, I'd probably get it painted personally.

On the car I saw, which was Silver, the paint did not appear uniform insofar as the silver did not quite match the rest of the car. The area was glass smooth and clear coated, but under the clear coat the silver paint almost looked as if it had never been polished.

Hard to describe, really, but it was obvious to me that something was not quite right.

For the neophytes here and those wanting to look out, what are the signs or ways to tell if a bumper or other body part has been re-sprayed?

A good person doing a PPI will have a device that measures paint thickness. Places that have been repainted will have thicker paint.

Two CPO 991s, neither had PPF, both had front bumper road rash, both got painted. Other than the cost, no big deal if done by a really good shop (e.g., a Porsche Certified Collision Center).

If you go to trade in your car every competent used car appraiser will use a paint meter to tell if a panel has been repainted. It's common to repaint rear bumpers but not fenders.

If it was obvious that something was not right then something was not right, case closed. When I bought my artic silver 997.2 the idiot dealer put screw holes in the front bumper which I can't stand. So I took it to a body shop that had a good reputation working on high end cars. While they had the bumper off they also repaired some road rash on the bottom of the bumper. When he was finished the bumper looked perfect like it never even happened. About the only way I know to tell when a car looks perfect is with a paint meter. A good body shop takes pride in their repairs looking like a brand new car. There should not be anything obvious if the repair was done properly.

Super nice! I'd bite if I didn't already have my ride. Love the turbo rims, makes it more unique...
