This. Before I ended up buying my lot car 2 1/2 years ago, I was asking one of the two dealers I met with about ordering a car. He pulled up a spreadsheet showing me his incoming allocations for the next several months.
If a slot hasn't been "claimed" by a customer order, the sales manager would configure that slot for a lot car. Up until just a week or so before the order moved to production status, the dealer could still tweak it to a customer's preference. For a large volume dealer like mine, I could have had an order go in just a week or two after placing it and received the car probably within two months at the longest. Sounds like maybe OP's dealer is small and doesn't have many slots to play with.

Yeah good point, my dealer did the same thing... he logged into the Porsche ordering system and showed me his list of allocations, what is open and what is already claimed, timing, etc. I'd say based on what I know about custom ordering a Porsche I would always want to work with a dealer willing to display that level of transparency in the process.

Transparency is good... trust but verify, right?

Porsche sales are very strong now whereas 2 1/2 years ago I think they were still recovering from 2008-2009. Just a hunch, but allocations might be harder to come by now.

Also, I'm under the impression that allocations are model specific. Can anybody confirm this? Thus, a 3.4 Coupe might be easy to get while a Targa GTS might have a lengthy wait. Is that accurate?

If so the question could have numerous correct answers.

That's correct, the product line has a certain # of variants scheduled on it and those get allocated out to the dealers accordingly, so limited production cars such as the Targa will be harder to find since their #'s are limited relative to other larger volume cars...

So for example Brett @ Sonnen recently mentioned that he had 2x GTS coupe's, 2x GTS Cabriolets and I think a similar # of 4 variants ... not sure anyone has a Targa GTS yet!
