Recently hit with a medium size pebble just above the rearview mirror. Thread on 6Spd stating Safelite has the assisted arm technology to get the glass alignment done properly. Read a few stories of botched jobs with other installers, so decided this is the way to go. Called Safelite and the US manufactued replacement glass w/labor ($ 50 holiday discount-woo-hoo!) is $ 504.95 + $9.95 disposal fee + $ 36.71 for mobile unit + TX tax $ 36.71 for a total of $ 586.60. Will post a review after install. T
I wish. Crack runs up from impact point (just above base of rearview mirror) and then down from impact point then makes a 90 degree turn. Entire crack is approx 18" long.

Have read of others with 991's who have had to have there glass reinstalled 2-3 times mostly for alignment issues and I did not want to go through that, especially living 2.5 hours from any P dealerships. Safelite (no affiliation) will come to my shop for a small fee, has the proper tools to align the w-screen, and others do not. Have heard problems with Chinese glass (waviness) but not with the US manufacturers. Have had two windscreens installed in the two 928's and they both came out great T
Sure you want green tint on your car? Can't find no-tint?
Chuck, There are three color choices and went with the green tint/gray shade (w/diversity antenna, four leads, etc) IIRC, there is not an option for no tint on the newer cars. Going to the shop in a bit to make sure that's what's in there and will make the change if necessary. Install is not until next week. T
p.s
just as a passing FYI, during the factory tour they point out 1 of only 2 robot stations on the assembly line; the one where the F&R glass is installed and the other
where the tires are mounted onto the rims... its pretty cool to see the robots install the glass...
Safelite has always done great work for me in the past.
The last being an Audi windshield in my 08 RS4. Was very pleased that it was actually an OEM Audi windshield they replaced it with with out even asking. Must be one of those windshields that aftermarket companies haven't made yet.

Was going to ask but was sold when told it's US and not Chinese and the fact that they have this alignment tool specifically for our cars. Price was right and no need to alert my insurance company for this amount. T

Have also used Safelite several times in the past and never a problem. Always get a kick out of the installers saying how good they are and the other installers do not know what there doing. Checked the glass coloring at the shop today and it appears G.G. has the green/gray glass ordered so good to go. T
I hope Safelite does a better job on yours than they did on mine. Mine they left a thick haze of scratches all around the window. Going back to complain I noticed an installer wiping excess sealant off one car with paper towels. Manager insisted to my face paper towels cannot scratch. Called Safelite District Manager, he said will re-do at another location. At the other location they refused to allow me to watch what they were doing. From the waiting room I heard a very distinctive sound. Rushed round the corner just in time to spot a guy walking past my car holding a wrench at headlight height. Refused to let me go look. Afterwards they refused to accept that the guy I saw walking by had put the ding near my headlight. Another call to the DSM. Wound up with free glass, money for detailing, scratches too deep to be safely removed... and excess sealant that would ooze out in hot weather even several years later.
And people wonder why I say the riskiest thing you can do with your car is let someone work on it.
Anyway, not saying Safelite is crap. What I'm saying is, Safelite don't mean jack. The only thing that matters is the skill and care of the particular individual doing the work. Assisted arm technology don't mean jack either, not if the guy operating it.... well you get the idea. Vet your tech, watch every move he makes, and even then ... cross your fingers.
Factory 911 glass seems soft and prone to chips.
I wonder if this aftermarket glass will be better.
Time will tell.

Agree with the installers level of workmanship. As stated earlier, have had zero problems with Safelite thus far and realize that this can change. This isn't my first rodeo and plan on being in close proximity to installer while work is performed T
