Default Why doesn't Porsche use run-flat tires?

I was just reading a glowing C and D article on the new Z06. Both the souped up Z07 and the regular use run flat versions of Michelin, PSC2 and PSS respectively. I had a couple of vettes before my Porsche and with the run flats the ride wasn't that bad. If Porsche used run flats I would think it would make the center lock wheels less of a concern to someone like me.

Noisy, hard riding and have less grip. Won't find them on Ferrari or Lambo either.

Amazing, someone who actually likes run-flats. I was just in a tire shop getting Michelin AS/3s on my 128i and the guy was telling me how on the 3 series with 19" wheels, the rear wheels would crack because the run-flats transmit too much vibration to the wheel. I couldn't wait to get the original run-flats off my BMW. They are more expensive to replace and most places won't patch them. They are also a bear to get off the rims when you replace them. I for one am very happy that Porsche don't use them.

Hi Bob. I know that is the paradigm. Not sure though about the 'less grip'. Article goes on to say the Z06 has the best skidpad ever recorded for a production car, significantly better than a GT3.

Z06 also has an issue with overheating. A severe one.

But back to the skidpad thing. It's more than just tires. You could put slicks on a Hummer and it wouldn't give you comparable skidpad numbers.

BTW I just replaced the P Zeros on my 997 with Michelin PSS (non run flat of course) and I really love the new tires. The article made me wonder how they would compare to the Corvette's tires.

I've quickly replaced the run flats on my last 3 BMWs well before it was necessary in order to improve the quality of the ride. The ride quality of the tires needs to improve tenfold before I'd ever consider putting or keeping them on any car.

Run flat tires SUUUUUUCK,.. That's why Porsche doesn't use them thank God!!! They ruin the ride, extremely hard tire that transmits way too much vibration and yes they will never handle as well as a non run flat tire!

Default Run away from 'Run-Flats'...

I had the selling dealer take the standard run-flats that came on my '11 Mini 'John Cooper Works' & replace them with non-run-flats before I took delivery! Same thing with the OEM tires on my BMW 650 Vert after it got stateside from its European Delivery pick-up!

So on these cars, I decided to always drive with a 'Tire Mobility Kit' which was standard on the M5 (which didn't com with run-flats). And I have heard good things in our forum about 'Slime', which is a cheaper compressor with sealant kit.

Just two months ago I replaced those worn 17" tires on the Cooper with 'Michelin Super Sports'. Best street tire I have ever driven and by far best ride I have had on either of my two Mini's to date! I am very happy Porsche hasn't drunk the 'run-flat' Kool-Aid that has badly intoxicated the BMW Group!

Saludos,
Eduardo

Run flat tires feel like rocks. In fact, Fred Flintstone had run flat tires on his car.

Whenever I get a car with run flats the first thing I do is get rid of them.

I do not know if it the run flats, but I have had more cracked rims and flat tires in the last two years on my BMW then I have had in my entire life.

I had to change 4 tires and 3 cracked wheels. I will be glad to go back to regular tires with my 991.

Run-flats are one of the reasons I'm moving from BMW to Porsche. I'm tired of having to go directly from the BMW showroom to the nearest tire dealer to swap tires.

Imagine how good the Vette's Skidpad number would be without Run Flats.

I hope that the tire manufacturers continue to improve Run Flats, but today they are too much of a compromise.

Run Flats have improved over the years, but they certainly would not be my first choice for sporty car offerings from Audi or BMW, much less a true sports car like a 991.
