Front grills will not stop debris from entering the cooling fan housing. The gravel and debris are being kicked up by the front tire rotation. Ask me how, I know. BTW, as important as cooling fans are -- you will not see a warning from the PCM. It will throw a fault, but without an ECU reader, you will never know. Until you overheat. I ran three track days at the Glen on one fan, oil temps never above 250, water temps were stable at 194. The car should run fine on one fan.

Sounds like a new mod is needed. More bumper type screen and a pop rivet gun and make some wheel shroud fan screens.

I think someone already did it and posted up their DIY.

11k over 3 years. DD but short commute.

yes i think some rocks get in through the louvered slats, but most from the side of the fender guard.

if someone has a diy, i'm all ears! getting to the fan housing is a real pain from just the wheel well. i'll need to learn how to take the front bumper off!

yep, and possibly through the side of the fender guard too, based on how much gravel was trapped in there when i took it out.

Hmm how much dirt/gravel road do you have in your short commute? I drove the dirt road through the Jedediah Smith Redwoods last year but took it super slow because I was worried about getting rocks in there and didn't get any.

city driving can be rough I guess! no dirt/gravel roads in my neck of the woods. New road construction perhaps, and the usual detritus on streets to blame...

Hmmmmm you didn't drive through that new alaska way tunnel that got the billion dollar digger stuck did you? Maybe the uranium pebbles or whatever it was that stuck it are so heavy the momentum gets them past the little plastic fins.

Reading this thread with interest. Is this issue a one off anomaly? Pirellis are quite sticky when up to temp and when moving at subdued speeds hear debris from rear tires kicking up in rear wells, so front tires are doing the same. I've looked into the vents from the rear slots behind the radiator fans and all looks ok. Humm, should I pull the fender liners and attach a screen or am I just a little ****? I understand it can't hurt but necessary? I would thing if it was an issue the mother ship would issue a TSB.

After removing fender covers, both fans were jammed with gravel and dirt preventing then from spinning. No damage to the fans or radiator was discovered after cleaning out the blockage. You can turn your front wheels all the way to the right and see the left radiator fan exposed.

Yeah, I had a look at the vents by the front wheels and the slots are fairly large. Can see how pebbles and such can get in there easily. Will do the mesh mod -- thanks for the mod info 77tony!

Ha! good one who knew that seattle was so gravelly...

too bad there isn't a mod for "bertha" the tunneler! not cheap anyways, and 1 billion may end up being an underestimate!
