The "your color isn't desirable" is just another dealer tactic. Watch the 997 GT3 forum sometime, there are regular threads where guys are seeking out the unusual colors.

Exactly. If the dealer has a Racing Yellow/ Guard Red in the lot to sell, he would be saying, "This car is so unique, why buy a boring color sport car, people would pay extra for this..."

Yellow is also safest and the easiest to spot from space.

When we took delivery at the dealership a dozen or so folks commented they loved the yellow, but also admitted they would never have the cajones to order it that way.
