Automobile Mag: 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S vs 2015 Porsche 911 GTS

I personally like the styling of this MB GT, but if I wanted that long-hood look in a car I'd probably pick the Jag F-type or maybe just get a vette.
If they bring the base GT in at around $100k with 456hp it will be hard to ignore!

I love the look of the Merc and I'm sure it is a monster. I drove the SLS back in Germany 3 years ago, and I couldn't stop smiling. In the end I think the biggest problem other car manufactures have when competing against the 911 is the fact that their car isn't a 911. They not only compete against specs, but they are up against history, pedigree, and philosophy. And in that regard, they will all lose.

Nah… they all look Astons. The 991 rear at a distance looks like an Aston. From the front, like a Panamera.

Good review. Although, I agree that the multifunction steering wheel comment is a joke. I just saw the AMG at the LA auto show. It looks good and has presence, but honestly the 911 looks better. There is balance to the 991 design. And we all know it will look just as good when the next generation comes...and the next...and the next.
It seems like they weren't able to do their own 0-60 times on the AMG, which I'm sure will be much less than 3.7, but I don't care. It's great that the GTS beat the upper model AMG. I'm sure all the comments would apply to the Carrera S versions. It means, unless the regular AMG GT (non-S) is much more dynamic, it's no match for the 991.
Also, with Jag offering a manual transmission on the F-type, that seems possibly more appealing than the AMG, though again, I'd take the 991 any day.

The MB is really, really trying, but you can't start as an icon, you earn icon over many, many years. The 911 is just that. With that said, if I were Buck Rogers, I would pick the Mercedes. I'm not Buck Rogers, so I'll stay with Porsche for my seventh 911.

So much for Turbo Charging being gas efficient...
"The Mercedes is also thirstier in our real-world testing. Over 504 miles, the turbocharged V-8 averaged 15.6 mpg while the Porsche’s naturally aspirated flat-six managed 16.9 mpg."

AMG GT S interior has way too much bling. Plus the iPad like screen looks terrible. I can't for the life of me, understand why BMW and MB seem to think a huge screen sticking out the top of the dash looks attractive. The outside of the AMG looks gorgeous, but it looks more like an old man's GT car than a real drivers car.
The AMG GT's nose wins some kind of award in the "longer is better" category. As a driver, I would feel like I'm steering things from the back of a bus.

soon 0-60 times etc wont matter, people will buy cars because they can update their FB pages in real time while driving...
doh ... its the end of the world as we know it!

The word that comes to mind is cartoonish. I personally hate to the super long front end- nose on sports cars. I like the opposite like the mid engined Ferraris and Lambo, Carrera Gt or Audi R8. And is it me or does this new Merc look like a Cross-Fire????
