Default "How Much Was That".. How do you answer?

Hi All,

Okay, here is a question that seems to come up with not only Cars, but most any item of high value, like a watch, house, or clothing. The old "How much was that?" question.

Let's face it, typically the guy asking you how much your 911 was, isn't driving one, or they would already know. Typically its someone who wants to blast you once you tell him how much you paid.

I have come to the realization that there is no perfect answer to this question. If you come out and tell them, some may wince and tell you what a waste of money that was, while others just feel like you are showing off.

If you don't tell or you are nebulous, they then want to know why you won't tell. This is a no-win situation.

I have come up with the "Somewhere north of $120k" answer. Pretty close, but not exact, & gives them a good idea of cost.

I would be interested in what you guys and gals have encountered and how you handle.

I say "I got a deal on a used one for around 80. Well cared for". I say this even though mine was new. I hate to show off saying 100+. I'm in the conservative midwest. Works for me. Humble response that's not bragging.

Only has happened to me once. Most just say how awesome the car looks and say " I bet that really goes fast".

I suppose a person could do a couple of things.

1. Tell the truth
2. Lie, and quote a cheaper sales price
3. Lie, and say you are leasing and just quote the monthly payment number

Personally, I'd opt for No. 4. Find a different group of people who weren't raised by wolves to hang around with.

Agree. Only time I had a cost question was a complete impolite stranger. But if I'm asked I lie and choose option 2.

When I go visit my parents in Tennessee, it's a very rural and low income area.
I was raised there and still have a lot of friends that aren't doing as "well" as I have.
I just tell them I got a great deal on one and avoid the true cost. They just won't understand...

If they are polite I tell the truth. If they are rude or look like trouble I ignore them.

I like answering a question like that with a question. For example say, "Why do you ask?".

If the person is an *** and fishing, say, "Now why would you ask a question like that?".

Easy, here's what I tell them:

"About double what my F-150 costs and half that of my Aston Martin".

By the time they process that - I'm already twenty feet away.

Lol winrawr

I go with "they start at 84k new but depreciate rapidly. I got mine used anyway" and leave it at that.
