Default Oil Brand Type / Weight being used/preferred

I had my car in for service a few weeks ago and they use Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40.

In reading up on the brand on the wonderful internet, car enthusiast have given it thumbs up in many applications.

Thoughts?

What are other dealers using?

The only issue I have with Penn Ultra Euro is that's it's just another thing I have to buy off the web and have shipped in because it's not available locally.

Pretty good price to stock up the garage: http://www.kellerheartt.com/Pennzoil.../550023653.htm

It's on the Porsche approved list. Plus, I like the idea of a 5W40 over the factory Mobil 0W40. Mobil 0W40 really shears down and low on zinc and phosphate. A good oil, but there are better. I do not know the best oil. Not my intent. Just want something better than the factory fill.

I'll only use these 4 oils in my 991:

Mobil 5W50
Joe Gibbs DT40 5w40
Motul 5W40
Redline 5W40

Using the Joe Gibbs now. May go to Mobil 5W50 next year. This is supported by my Blackstone UOA's over many years and miles.

I suggest you do them (UOAs) too.

Sorry. But no such thing. Unless they used Mobil Turbo Diesel 5W40. A very good oil. Used by a lot of 996 owners.

Yes. All full synthetics. Unless you plan to drive in the arctic tundra, all these oils are fine for year round use.

Arctic tundra, then use a 0W40 for a few months.

Interesting - I'll have to get clarification from them. I know it was on my service sheet as 5W40 because I asked why they didn't use the 0W40 that the factory used.

Stealth, I bet they used Mobil 0W 40 or a different brand of oil for a 5W 40

Ok, just checked with them. They used Pennzoil 5W40. Mystery solved!

Stealth, how many quarts did they put in? How much did they charge per quart of oil?

I think a lot of dealerships are using Pennzoil now because it's less expensive than mobil.

Is there any reason why folks prefer 5w40 over 0w40? From what I've read I gather that most engine wear and tear is from a cold start, and 0w40 has better cold characteristics than 5w40...

Now 5w50 I could see the benefit since it is a 50 at temp.

Can someone ELIF?

No Royal Purple users?
I ran it in my 997 at the suggestion of Mike Callas at Rennsport (West of Houston)

Unless you live/start/drive in 0 deg F for a long period of time I don't believe you will see the benefits of 0 weight oils unless it is the only oil recommended like some ECO box's that require 0w-20.

Just my thoughts.

I'm planning on testing a sample on this next oil change to at least have a good starting point and then retest in a year or 2 after a number of oil changes to see how things are wearing.

Please change your oil yearly, a Rennlister might want to buy your car someday.

Dang where are the PFPE lubricant tolerant engines? 5x the price, 10 x the longevity.... Fill and forget!
