I respectfully disagree with you. The 7th gear definitely has a very real purpose on the car...it's a true overdrive gear and works great on very long freeway trips where you are not changing speeds and staying over 65 mph. The gas mileage compared to the same 997.2 without this gear is a big difference. I know this from personal experience of owning both vehicles. Don't dismiss the 7th gear just because it's hard to get into. Depending on your driving style, once you get the hang of it, it's an invaluable tool. Good luck!
You are right, I love the tall ratio in 7. The issue I have is 1st and 2nd are so tall that ratios 3-6 are too close, so the true benefit of having 7 speeds is wasted. Too often the marketing guys want a great 0-60 time and trade a shift to 3rd for a better time when it would be a better driving experience. (Could be long legs for the autobahn too, only speculation on my part...) So let me clarify, if they are going to give 7 speeds, space them better, definitely not about getting to the 7th gate, in fact mastering a new shift is part of the experience you get with a manual.
Thanks for all the congrats! For you guys asking about the gauges, I snapped a quick pic attached. Background is black, but the lettering is a light shade of green like the original cars.
other retro touch are the silvery gauge pointer centers
