We know from Formula One that even 6cylinder turbo engines can sound like nothing ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
If I had to guess is that this prototype does not have all the "sound engineering goodies" that will be on the final product.
I can't see a 4cyl in the 991 just yet, We will see though...

GM of my dealer just came back from Porsche presentation in Barcelona yada yada yada
Expect the next batch of 911 with jump in power and mpg on
All 911 will me turbocharged
Flat 4 is a go
There is a 8 cylinder turbo variant in a works to replace the current "turbo" as all 911 will be turbo
dont know if it's true but that's what i was told

Maybe they go flat 4 turbo for base and S, stick with flat 6 turbos for turbo/turbo S? It's hard to imagine they'd actually push a flat 8 turbo, though it would give them even more insane performance possibilities, but with fuel economy being pushed, still seems unlikely.
I'd think pushing a bit of electric supplementing (100 ft-lb?) with limited all-electric mileage would do wonders for their in-town fuel numbers, add low-end torque, and give the oh-so-marketing-critical 0-60 numbers a boost into the mid-to-low 3's for the base & S - and let them stay with the flat-6 to boot, but hey, the 4C shows that a 4 cylinder turbo... Sounds worse?![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
In any case, I hope they had that car set to a limited max RPM to test low torque, but it certainly doesn't sound sweet in that video.

I call bluff.
There is nothing that they can gain by changing the number of cyls that they couldn't accomplish a million other ways. A turbo as standard I could see though.
There just isn't any reason to defile the 911 with a joke of a 4 cyl for absolutely no gain in efficiency. They could go all the way down to a 1.99L flat 6 and still stay true to the 911 (if they wanted to blow it that much) without leaving efficiencies on the table. I think a 2.7ish size platform is more likely for the next variant though.
A flat 8 911 is also pointless. Maybe if it was an unholy slantnose I guess, but not in a real 911. The flat 6 is perfection and what makes a 911 a 911. We could see anything from 2 to 4 L in size, single or multiple turbos, superchargers, electric motors in the wheels, even a redneck nitrous kit with a carbon offset pay per use that automatically charges your Starbucks card.
But there is no reason, and nothing to gain at all, from changing the number of cyls in a 911.

I agree with StudGarden.
They bloody well know a 4cyl 911 will NOT SELL ! What will set it apart from a beetle ? ;-)
A small displacement, forced induction (turbo, compressor or whatever) Flat 6 will be able to retain more of the 911 character while still being more energy efficient !
8cylinder ? In a downsizing war ? Not very likely !
OR, isn't there supposed to be a new model between 918 spyder and 911 turbo ? Maybe they can use a flat8 for that becuase the 918 sound awfull with its flat plane crank ?!

Porsche had better be careful. Chevy Stingrays, Z06's and Z28 sales are already nipping at their market share heels, and meeting or bettering track times, with a warranty....say now, that Evo/Subi is looking pretty good too.
