Thanks for the write up and pictures. It enabled me install my MirrotTap and BlendMount. Everything came apart pretty easily (I also had the silver metal piece). Getting to where you can see the plug (all yellow for mine) took some difficult contortions for my 60 year old body. Rather than the plug unclipping, my plug pulled apart. Same process with the wiring, I just had to carefully get the plug lined up and use the trim tool to push it back in. It's all good though, powers up, looks great and BlendMount holds the RD firm.

I like those mounts, but I would want the detector high and to the right of the mirror, up near the top of the window. I don't like them hanging down in the middle of the window.

H,
It hangs just below the mirror and has surprisingly little effect on outward visibility. Suction cup mounts put them in the middle, they bounce around and typically fall off periodically. If the RD (Escort Max in my case) was to the right of the mirror I think it would be difficult to see and work the buttons.
Just my opinion, and after only a day, I'm very pleased with the BlendMount.

I definitely prefer it near the roofline, but the main reason is not because what I see, but the fact that *everyone else* can see it. My V1 was always nearly invisible tucked away up high.

Good point. I wonder if anyone could make a quality mount that would place the RD up high and to the side of the mirror--left or right.

I was going back and forth on another window mount detector or some crazy stealth install.

I ordered the Escort Max2 (i have the 9500ix in my other car)
I then ordered the Invisicord version of the wire tap, again I have been using this brand for a while.
Lastly i ordered this http://www.ebay.com/itm/171367664487?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT. I to do not like the way the blendmount hangs down and obstructs my view. I also do not like the suction cups. I have used these mounts currently and previously, they are wonderful.

Thanks to this thread I now have my correct colored wires for the install.

great write up on this, just wired up my 2015 991 gt3.

a couple of things I'd mention:

1. get a cable 3 inches longer, it's really tight in your wiring diagrams and with my 9500 the wire routed through the back wouldn't make it, I had to reroute the wire through the front of the lower plastic cover, then it would just make it.
2. a headlamp is a lifesaver in this work, it's dark inside the 911, and it's really tight up in there, so I used my camping headlamp and it made things MUCH easier.

Thanks so much for this great tutorial!

I started trolling around the 991 forum two months ago, when I bought my first Porsche, a 2013 911 S Cabriolet. I've read lots of great advice on the forum, but this tutorial was super duper useful and inspired me to sign up so I could comment.

I just finished installing the 15-inch MirrorTap and BlendMount model BV1-2021, which works with my Valentine One. I would definitely recommend the 15-inch MirrorTap with the Valentine One--its length is absolutely perfect for the connection. The 12-inch model would have been too short. The directions were spot-on and easy to follow. Everything went smoothly.

I was a bit concerned about having the detector dangle below the mirror. (When using the suction cups, I mounted it just to the left of the mirror, as high on the windshield as it would go.) But the position below the mirror seems great, and I don't think it will block my view of the road at all.

I'll snap pics this weekend and give a full report after I've had a chance to drive it on twisty country roads in the Catskill Mountains this weekend.

Thanks again!

Excellent thread, thanks! One note, I just did the install on a 2014 911-50, my mirror tap cable was not long enough to route through the stalk as you suggest. Not sure if there are different lengths available, maybe I should have ordered something different, but I had to route under the gap between the upper trim and the windshield (which worked fine) in order for it to reach.

Another Blendmount and mirror tap user here. I had mine professionally installed for $75. I was not brave enough to experiment on my brand new 2015 GTS. I love this option, rock solid, no rattles and no visibility obstruction. I am using the Escort 9500xi. The only thing I miss is the mute and lockout signal button, now I have to stick my finger between the mirror and detector and make sure I don't press any other nearby buttons.

I have also installed Suntek on my white car, It was recommended by the most reputable installer in South Florida to use Suntek instead of XPel who he also installs because of my color. I am very happy with the job and the protection it provides. I just did the front bumper, full hood, fenders and mirror caps. FYI I use Chemical Guys clear bra Detailer to clean it and top it off with Xpel sealer every time I wash the car.

To the OP just a correction, thickness of the films are the same on XPel and Suntek. The difference is in the amount of glue that each manufacturer uses. XPel has thicker glue but the actual film has the same thickness as Suntek.
