Default When should I expect to hear the delivery date?

I ordered the 991 in January and changed from a 2S to a 4S within a day after ordering. When I changed the dealer mentioned he was pretty sure he could get me the same April delivery as the 2S, but would update me "as it went into production"

When I ordered I didn't realize how tough this waiting would be and I want to make sure I'm not traveling when the car is ready.

I'm a little confused by the process. Why won't he know if I can get the April delivery/March build until the car actually goes into production. Isn't there a slot he would allocate for whatever 911 was built? Is it worth asking him again for an update?

This sounds pretty similar to my order. If the dealer has an available allocation, they will enter your order either that day or the next. If they don't have a slot, they will have to wait to enter your order when they do have one. If they aren't giving you specific dates, it's because they don't actually have an allocation for you yet. I ordered mine in September 1, 2013, got an allocation in October for a late December completion, and took delivery on February 7th. Since you don't have a specific completion estimated date yet, it seems overly optimist that they are going to get you a car for April with a January order.

I agree to the last statement. Your dealer has probably no allocation for your car yet. Order January with delivery April sounds very optimistically for me too. Keep bugging them.

So to directly answer the OP question: When should I expect to hear the delivery date?

Before you leave the Dealership when you order the car..... If the dealer cannot do this, then they do not have an allocation or there is some other reason for why they can not or will not enter you order into the PCNA "Porsche Sales & Vehicle Management System".

For both my orders, I walked out of the Dealership with a copy of the Porsche Sales & Vehicle Management System Build sheet, which gave me estimated dates for many different points in the process.

I hear that Porsche is now investigation the option of providing you with Video Clips of your car going thru the manufacturing process. Probably at an additional cost though.....

Ha! Reminds me of a thread on the Indian MC forum that someone started and deleted and it made people crazy wondering what he had written. Became the longest thread about nothing... Like Seinfeld.

To the OP, yes, you should bug your salesperson for an update. How dare them not check with the factory every minute as to the progress of the built.

Keep us informed

There are more useful ways for people to increase their post counts...like contributing useful information! And this is a useful post if it stops one person from reviving an ancient thread!
