Default Car cover question

The dealer 'gave' me an outdoor cover for my 991 (it looks like something off the space shuttle). The car is garaged for the winter (at least this winter, and I thought I read somewhere that it wasn't good to keep the car covered. Why is that? Is the material too heavy that it might scratch the car. Also, I'm assuming if the car was kept outside, I should keep it covered.

That cover should be just fine. Never put a car cover on a dirty car.

Its not good to keep a car covered. But it may be better than the alternatives. If you must, then do everything possible to minimize scratches- clean car, clean cover, install correctly and secure its not flapping or moving around in the wind. But really the only cover that has been proven to work well is the garage.

if you're going to keep your car garaged, you should use a cover made for indoor storage, there's a difference.

Why should you not use an outdoor cover for indoor storage? I do, in an unheated garage, mostly to protect it when family members are rummaging around for the snowblower, shovels etc. which has been a regular occurrence this winter!

I think it's ok to use outdoor cover indoor, but the indoor versions do breathe better & appear softer.
I use the cotton/flannel stuff inside, but the Evolution three & Noah materials are great also...and never had any problems.
Just never put on a dirty car

I think the important thing here is not putting the cover on a dirty car. Putting it on, pulling it off, or wind and other movement will cause any dirt to scratch the paint, and then it gets stuck to the inside of the cover, so it just builds up over time and gets worse.

i've used an indoor cover for years on my garage kept car every winter. the car needs to be clean before you put the cover on and i also run my cover through the wash after the season ends as they get really dirty. i want a cover that breathes and an outdoor cover won't do that as effectively as the indoor covers. the last thing i want is any trapped moisture sitting on my car or the canvas for an extended period of time.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into one of those soft covers for indoor storage (and only on the car when clean)

Carnewal offers a great indoor cover. Lots of color choices. Porsche crest on hood area. $$$. Get Rennlist discount.
