I agree, Porsche would only make sound engineering decisions on a 911. You can't really imagine the designers and engineers sitting around doing a number saying "man those 300C's look cool with giant wheels, let's copy them".

Came across this suspension geometry article. http://alcor.concordia.ca/~istih/suspensn.html It summarizes but covers a lot, including a section on wheel diameter saying larger provides more grip, better rolling and ride. For Porsche to change to a larger diameter they must have had massive technical data supporting it. Or maybe they just got tired of Mauer whining about how good big rims looked on his drawings. Yeah, that was probably it.
