I know that there has been a lot in this forum regarding break-in but I have a question that I don't think has been asked.
I have a new 50th with PDK and in automatic mode at slower speeds the RPM is often between 1500-2000. In my previous MT 996, I would attempt to keep revs above 3k to avoid lugging.
Is there a similar issue with PDK and should one switch to manual mode to keep it in a lower gear and thus keep the revs higher?
I agree. Use manual mode to keep closer to 2400 top 3000 rpm. When warmed up (oil temp 165'F plus) put in Sport mode and you can have a blast driving between 2400 and 4000 without worrying about hurting anything. Do no drive at constant rpms for more than a few minutes in any gear. Change up/down to vary the rpms in the break in period. The day I took delivery my wife and I headed for the freeway to visit a friend. I was constantly shifting between 3rd and 7th gears and in between. She thought I was crazy which was probably correct as who would be sane after waiting 6 months for the car!
I'm interested to know where people think the harm is in this. If low rpm alone was harmful then idle would need to be set much higher. So it can't be rpm alone. If anything it must be some combination of rpm and load, which would make sense. There is no harm after all in slowing down to idle in gear, no? Small amounts of throttle also won't qualify as harmful "lugging". Using more throttle, at some point PDK will automatically downshift. It seems a little much to assume Porsche would do anything other than set this point to avoid having too much throttle at too low rpm.
Driving low speeds in auto is not enjoyable in a dct, most of these type of modern dct vehicles are program to be very conservative in auto. Gotta put it in manual and drive in low gears especial 1st and 2nd gear. Stay above 1800rpm should be the minimum, I haven't have any of the lugging problems because mine is mt, I've notice even at 1500 rpm in 2nd gear no lugging. Over 1000 miles now and ready to do the first oil change....before the 2000 break in period, 1000 miles of city driven is pretty much enough for break in procedure it needs, had about 300 highway miles so its all good.
By the way how many miles do you have already, don't baby it, you can still drive semi aggressively as long as you keep it under 4-5k rpm
