Is it clearly a crack, or just a deep scratch?

Just an observation, but the damaged area matches up exactly with the old weights. I wonder if when removing the weights, they used a tool that caused the dent and was forceful enough to cause the crack or weaken it to cause the crack later, just speculation of course, but curious nonetheless. I've installed/removed enough of those weights, they can be a bugger to get off. Pure speculation of course, they used a pry bar and hammer to remove the weights, the weights popped off and the edge of the pry bar hit the spoke with enough force to dent the spoke and crack and or weaken it and the crack developed. I know this is reading a lot from a pic, just trying to help.

Best of luck.
By George, Watson, I think you have it.

GSIRM3, definetely a crack not a scratch.

Chuck - yes, I think that 080808 nailed this one. Hopefully this will make the convo with the dealer easier.

What I saw looked so much like a scratch I figured there was a crack I wasn't seeing. Simple test: paint over the crack, let dry, drive. If its a crack it will crack dried paint. But it won't. Cracks never follow smoothly curved lines. Its just a scratch.

FWIW, my first impression from the photo is a scratch, not a crack. Hopefully your dealer can sort it all out, though.

I thought it looked like a crack. Either a slither of metal is missing or there is some displacement of the segments to my eyes.

If that is a crack, its the first one I've seen to run in a smooth arc, be wider at the end than the beginning, and start and end near no obvious points of stress. What this obviously is instead is a scratch made by an inattentive mechanic prying off a wheel weight with a flat-head screwdriver. In other words, evidence of what I was saying in another thread, that the riskiest thing you can do with your car is let someone work on it.

Chuck 911, I see your point about working on your own car. I do the oil and brakes, but I have no ability to replace the tires. I would expect the dealer to be able to do it correctly, although they did not at many levels. I will let everybody know what the dealer says next week after I drop off the car.

It "looks" like a crack to me, but I would be happy if it was just a scratch and happier still if the dealer replaces the wheel.

Yeah. I know what you were doing to crack a wheel. Busted!

Let us know the outcome with the dealer please.

Tire shops are the worst. My first in a long series of observed incompetence was a tire shop that would have damaged my undercarriage and oil lines had I not poked my head around the door and stopped them just in time.

Anyway, what you really should do is slap a little touch up paint, nail polish, whatever, over it. That way by the time you get to the dealer the true condition will be clear. If its a scratch the paint will be intact. If its a crack then it will have cracked the paint. Could not be easier to settle.

UPDATE FROM THE DEALER: The dealer declares that it is a scratch and not a problem. I will put some paint on it and keep an eye just in case. Thanks to all of your for your thoughts and input along the way. I will be keeping an eye on the wheels just in case.

LOL, that is pretty much how I felt, although I am not 100% convinced yet though.
