Default Snow Tire Packages for a 991

I will be picking up a new leftover 2012 991 Cab next week and will use the car sparingly in Chicago in the winter. I have always bought a set of used wheels/snows, but that was before TPMS. I hope this isn't tremendously redundant, but I am trying to figure out what used sets I can consider. I spoke with Tire Rack, whom I have purchased lots of stuff from in the past, and it sounded like 235/40/19 (f) and 285/35/19 is the size for me. The only tires they have left that fit my car are Pirellis, BTW. But even if I find wheels/tires that fit, he made it sound like if the TPMS sensor wasn't from the same model and same year as my car, that it wouldn't work. I would have to dismount the tires, buy and install the right sensors and remount. That probably adds $500 to any used purchase.

Is this true? Are there any other winter wheel packages I can consider? Will the car run if the sensors are mismatched to the car with just an idiot light, or will it put the car in limp mode? I probably don't mind having the TPMS not function in the winter given how few miles I expect to put on the car, but limp mode (or worse) would be a problem. ;-)

Any guidance from those who have been through this would be most helpful. If this subject has been fully vetted elsewhere, I'm sorry I didn't find it. Please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I know what you mean about the difficulty finding the right info regarding the TPMS. You might check out this thread as there are some other ideas about the winter setups:

Thanks. I had previously perused that and just read it fully, but it doesn't really address the idea of buying a used package and the TPMS sensor sync issue. It does seem that the Pirellis, which are the only tires left in stock at Tire Rack that fit the 19s, are perhaps not the greatest.

Everything that you were told when you spoke with one of my co-salesman was correct with regards to the TPMS sensors. Porsche uses several different models on their cars, and they are not interchangeable. If the sensor is not used in the wheel, or is not correct, you will get the light on the dash but it will not affect the car otherwise. New sensors will run about $110 each and a tire guy a is going to charge about $25 each to do the install. The car can then be told to see the new sensor and it will on it's own.

Give me a call on Monday if you'd like and I will confirm if a used set of 19" wheels from a 997 will fit a 991. I can tell you for sure that 18" wheels will not because of the control arm knuckle in the new rear suspension. Thanks.

Edit on 10/29: Our 19" 991 wheels have the same width and offset as the 997 wheels do

Pretty good follow through from Tire Rack. Make a call, question the answers and get a retort. Sweet.

Too bad our forums don't have as deep a classified section as the Mercedes forums. I know we have 911's and the #'s are loaded in the MBZ column but you can hop on there and find 100's or guys selling perfectly good used snow tire and wheel combo's and giving them away.

If you know the exact offsets you need there are lots of options on Ebay that won't break the bank.

Yes, I've always bought a used set of wheels and snows, but if I need new I'll get it through TR. They have always been a very good seller. I met the owner, who's about 85, a number of years ago on a Saturday when I was there buying/mounting tires on my 540 (on my way from Chicago to Michigan) helping move some tires. Very neat place.

TPMS is always an issue...sensors were different between my 997.1 and 997.2. I just drove the winter in the 997.2 with the warning light on and checked the air pressure manually every few weeks. I can also confirm 18s don't work on the 991

So what are the exact offsets? Anyone know what other cars share those offsets to make a search easier?

Can anyone help with wheel offsets and/or other cars that share the same wheel size so I can have a more effective search for wheels/snows that may be for sale here, on eBay or sixspeedonline?

Thanks, but I'm getting a base Carrera and am hoping to get 19" snows. Anyone know the base Carrera equivalent?
