Exclamation Winter tires Poll: 20in Michelin or 19in Pirelli/Continental

Hi All,

Living in the Capitol of the True North (Canada eh), heavy snows and -30 celsius are the way of winter life. Fortunately, Ottawa roads are plowed often and I only use the major routes. To help maximize traction and control, here are the 3 contenders.

1. 20in Pilot Alpin PA4 | Michelin
2. 19in Continental ContiWinterContact TS830 P
3. 19in Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II

I have heard that the Michelin PA4 tires are way ahead of competitors in terms of snow traction, but will a downsized Conti or Pirelli tire work better than a 20in Michelin? This poll wouldn't be necessary if Michelin had made the PA4 in 19in that would fit our C4S, but we gotta work with what we have.

So, please tell me which one of the above you think will yield the best snow-driving machines, thanks

I'm planning on picking up the Michelins and just swapping the rubber out using the OEM wheels year round. I've also heard great things about the Alpin PA4's. We have them on my wife's BMW for the winter and they are fantastic.

everyone at the dealership was marveling over the 20in Alpin 4's last winter when we put 'em on. They all said wow, you can climb mountains with those! Anyway, that's all I know. They performed extremely well for me - I had grip and more grip..the tire noise on the highway was not bad at all - but our winter was not severe last year. About ready to put 'em on again..hoping for more snow this year

I have had the best luck with Continental DWS tires.

The general rule is to go higher profile with winter tires. Narrower and higher even better. Call the Tire Rack to get the details on your choices.
