I can dircetly compare mom's 5-series touring (F11) with Individual interior with my own Q5 with Audi's Exclusive interior and the BMW, allthough very beautiful, is not that well built and used materials aren't as nice.

The new M5 is my daily driver. It is a great family hauling sport sedan. You need to decide if you want room or a gt coupe. The 991 has become a comfortable larger GT car. A better comparison would be the M6 vs 991 S. i would take the 991. For everyday driving comfort, utility, speed, the M5 all the way. i don't understand why people like Audi interiors so much. I have a tt rs and R8 v10. the interiors are ok. i don't like the seats in Audis for long trips. The M5 is in another league as far as comfort on a long trip. I think the M5/M6 and 991 interiors are superior to the Audis imo. I like the rwd of the M5 compared to the Audis.

As for the OP... you're either looking for a sedan or a coupe/convertible. Can't really cross shop these two. M6/991S would be a slightly more congruous pair. but M5 VS 991, all you have to decide between is whether you want a sedan or coupe/convertible.
Also, Panny >>> M5. Because Porsche. QED.

Thanks for the replies. It's true that these are 2 different cars but it doesn't hurt to ask for opinions. Anyways I think I will go with the 911 since the M5 is more expensive and I don't really need the extra seats as I have my 6GC for a year now and only used my back seats maybe 3 times.

Two different cars and only you can make that choice. Its a very personal choice.
Having said that - I traded my 2010 M5 for a 2013 C2S as my daily driver. I had the M5 for nearly 4 years - for me it was more like "done that" attitude. Also the extended warranty was due - so do I fork out almost $5K for an extended warranty knowing that I will only keep the car for at most 2 years. Or go with something different.
I had a 96 C4S as a daily for about 3 years and loved it. Both the M5 and the 991S will have the same rear wheel drive issues in the winter. The new M5 didn't do it for me - thought about it - but I would be trading for basically the same car again. Sure it will be more modern - but I like my '10 M5 over the new one.
Well - Porsche had a short time lease offer on the 991 (2 years), which was perfect for me. So I traded it - took alittle bath - but I and completely happy with the 991S. One of the best driving vehicles, if not Porsches, that I have ever driven. The Pano GTS or Turbo is great - but was too much money.
Your decision - and I'm that you will be happy with which ever car you choose. BTW, I have had BMWs since 1984 - and this is the first time without a 4 door sedan for a while.

As others say they are very different cars in any case - what do you like driving, what do you need from a space perspective, etc.?

It's an S as I think it suits me well in terms of performance and luxury. Now all I need is to put down a deposit and try to sell my 640GC asap so I can have it hopefully before the end of this month.

Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?
[holds up one finger]
Curly: This.
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don't mean ****.
Mitch: But, what is the "one thing?"
Curly: [smiles] That's what *you* have to find out.
