Hi Greg..old thread but recent comments are from last few days. I agree with you....991 = more car less money. But as you point out the 997 GTS has a bit of collectibility to it

Chuck911 swings and misses here. The 997 GTS didn't even have the option for dynamic motor mounts. Later 997 Turbo and GT cars only. And you couldn't retrofit them because the wiring harnesses for them were never installed on 997 GTSs. So there's no way he drove one with it.

To the topic at hand. I will agree with Chuck's assessment that the GTS needs a lot of suspension and brake work to hang with the GT cars on track. It is a Carrera first and foremost with a C2S suspension and brakes. But you can pick up a GTS for mid $70s where a 997.2 GT3 with similar mileage and no back seat will run you another $50k. $10k in suspension, braking and tire mods on a GTS will hang with a tuned OEM .2 GT3 all day. And totally agree the CLs are an answer to a question noone asked (mine has 5 lugs).

I looked at both a 991 C2S and my GTS before picking the GTS. If I DDd a Carrera I'd get the 991 without a doubt (prob a C4S). The interior is much more modern and approachable and you can make the 991 C2S softer than a 997 GTS could ever be out of the box. While a 991 C2S was fun to toss around, I never felt as connected to it as when I drove the GTS. It was very good, just not as good as the 997. Which is why I went with a GTS for my weekend/track car.

Each generation is going to be faster. We'd be disappointed in our favorite marque if they did not do this!

Perhaps less extreme as each 911 is already in the top 1%... but the GTS will always be just a little more special but look at BMW... an e90 335 is a lit fast than an e36 M3. However - it will never be an M and therefore never be as special.

I've driven the 991.1S manual in the past and concluded, back then, that my 2012 997GTS 6mt was simply more involving. Sure, the 991 handled better, but it was boring compared to my 997 GTS. I thought the 991 was a failure until... I recently test drove a 2016 991.1 GTS manual.
that changed everything. I'd say, the 991.1 GTS manual is just as if not a touch more involving than my 997. see pictures of my car and the one i test drove recently. I LOVE 997 body shape, but the 991 isn't too shabby either.

Gotta love the 997.2 GTS for sure.

For me, i thought the 991 was a huge upgrade over the 997 in quite a few ways. I felt like the interior build quality and ergonomics were far superior, as was the reduction in road noise which to me was excessive in terms of being annoying and also being harder to hear the engine cleanly.

The biggest thing for me is the suspension. The ride quality is far superior in the PASM 991, but the damping is the biggest difference. The suspension control is phenomenal in the 991 and the reduction in wheel hop / improvement in tire contact is enormous. The 997 can feel quite bouncy and unsettled when driving over rough pavement. The 991 chassis improvements make the car feel much more settled to me and confidence inspiring. It also understeers much less than the 997 in my expereince.

I know for some that can make for a less exciting driving experience as some prefer a more edgy car. I think the 991 is edgy enough, and can be provoked when you want and driven cleanly when you want. I also think the steering in both cars is fantastic.

The 991S does sound better to me and feels notably more powerful.

For me the 991 is an improvement in every way, but that doesnt mean the 997 isnt an excellent car, and the best choice for some.

FWIW i use my car as a weekend/good weather car that will see some track time.

Honest to Be. This discussion adds a new dimension to the expression: "gilding the lily." Why oh why do so?? Our 2011 GTS is gone, as is the 1985 Carrera. In their place: our 2017 BASE Carrera 7 speed manual. No matter what blah, blah, blah you post what I can tell you is: this is the very best, most outstanding, totally awesome Porsche Carrera that there ever was, or ever will be. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. :-)

PS: Daily driver.

Old Guy, yes I agree, my base is superb. Something inside Porsche's Carrera team got reignited, hopefully they will keep it up.

I happily sold a 2013 base Carrera 7mt coupe and bought a 2012 997.2 GTS cab. I love my GTS. Much more involving car, and I missed driving a cab on beautiful days here in San Diego.

Between the two, there's no contest for me. In fact, I like the new Corvette Z51 better than the 991.

Agree. I test drove the 991 S and it reminded me of a Jag XJ8 I had for a company car in 2007. Smooth and lovely. I paid about $5k over mid-price point as my 997GTS had the $5k leather dash/doors/console...with 12k miles. It was a San Diego car. I paid $81k. Most 997GTS I see do not have that leather upgrade option on dash, etc. While this car will depreciate down to $60k and flatten out...the 991s will depreciate much more. 991GTS would be the way to go should I ever go there....

I had a 997.2 Carrera S for 4 years (not a GTS but it was loaded) and have had my 911/50 (mechanically a GTS) for 3.5 years. Also, totally loaded and both PDK. The 997 was a wonderful car and I believe the steering felt a little better and more connected than the 991. Other than then my 991 is better in EVERY other measurable. Faster/better braking/more comfortable/nicer interior and on and on and on. My comments are related to them both being a DD. I won't take my 911/50 to the track so no comment which is better there.

So, after reading all the above, I'm faced with a choice. I'm in CA and have been driving a 997.2 cab, manual, as a weekend driver. I took the Porsche Activity Center manual class and experienced the 991S on track. Awesome car. So I'm considering moving into an S manual 997.2, but started looking at 991S'es. Which would you take - 2013 991S, manual for $69k with 60k miles OR 2010 997S with limited slip, sport chrono for $60k and 10k miles. I'm interested in investment as well as spirited driving. I'll put 5-7k miles on it per year.

I did my choice and got 991.1 CS manual. I chose it over 992.2 GTS manual, if it makes sense I have about 12K miles on 991 and happy with my choice.
I honestly do not care for a PDK for my DD car.

Haven't driven a 997.2 Carrera GTS but have driven many 997's in general and last weekend got to drive a 991 C2S. If I was taking a car to daily drive the 991 C2S is way better in just about every way. More comfortable, quieter to road noise, yet can be made loud if you go with PSE. Interior is way more roomy and overall the 991 C2S is a better car. However, I am planning on continuing the search for a 997.2, because this is a weekend car and will be used exclusively on the street. Will go on Porsche Club drives and drives with friends. The 997.2 just has more of a classic feeling to me in general and also has the more classic 911 looks. For me it is the right choice for a weekend car.
