As a former real-Beetle owner, and even if I weren't, I find the New Beetle awful and the New-New Beetle even worse.

+1, I owned a 63 with a bazillion miles on it and a 74 was my first new car. Great cars both, as long as you didn't mind changing oil every 1000 miles!

+1. I had a 1966 with a 1300cc engine. It was indestructible. I know, I tried. It was slow, cold (heat exchanger never really worked), uncomfortable, plodding and absolutely reliable. Almost to a fault.

I just couldn't get rid of it. It was once hotwired and stolen - simple trick involving string to tie two wires behind dash in frunk and hit them to a third wire- the thiefs parked the car, walked away and left it running. After about a day I got a call from the police telling me to pick it up in north Philadelphia at 15th and Green streets. . It was still running when I found it. My, that was over 40 years ago... looked just like this..But this one has the wrong hubcaps

Me too. It was the first car i bought new. Below is exactly what it was. Hard to imagine next to the 991- does $1550 sound right? Reliable is an understatement- except my engine seized 6 blocks on the way home from the dealer (in Logan on Broad Street). I walked back there in shock. They retrieved the car and put another engine in- from one on the lot- in about an hour and half and sent me on my way. After that, it made it to California and back in a months drive around. 60 -65 on level stretches- also downhill (unless the clutch was in),uphill not so much. With a Bursch exhaust pipe it became my first Porsche (sort of).

You can really see the 911 to 356 resemblance. I can remember growing up in Stuttgart and seeing VW's all over.

You got yours at Moore Motors too?? Small world. What is ironic is that i saw my first Porsche in the Moore showroom. I was the eleven year old kid who came back a few years later to buy the car I fell for tha day
