I'll bet Porsche orchestrated this for C&D after they published identical quarter mile stats for the base 991 and 981S in their print mag...

That video's already made the rounds on this sub-forum and all of the others too.

I was not aware of that. I saw it earlier today for the first time.

Interesting that both cars have the same engine. I wonder what Porsche did specifically to detune the engine in the 981, and if a tuner could retune it to 350 HP without it costing a fortune.

I think I remember seeing a different intake system and (obviously) exhaust, but I am sure there are some ecu changes as well.

The Boxster S is fantastic, it's handling dynamics are great, albeit different from my base Carrera. The racetrack performance is not the only reason to go for a 911 though. I felt claustrophobic in the boxster even with the top down( esp compared to the 911 with a glass sunroof), it only has two seats, less storage, and generally worse depreciation. They are both great cars, just different for different tastes.

Most of the HP difference is in the exhaust, which is a lot more restrictive on the Boxster. Porsche has simply narrowed the gap too much between the Boxster S and the base Carrera. If they come out with a 981 Boxster Spyder/Cayman R, they are going to eat the base Carrera for lunch.

Yah they also narrowed the price difference as well. You can build a Boxster S for over 80 grand. Add the Spyder and R upgrade, how much will they cost??? 90 grand???

Also, I don't consider the performance difference between the 991 base and S to be substantially (and i mean massive difference) different esp after trying them both at nj speedway and montecella. So if your theory is correct about the new Boxster and cayman variants, they could also give the 991s a run for the money. So Porsche should just discontinue the 991 and just focus on the higher performing 981 models

On the racetrack at Porsche Club DE's a very good driver in a Boxter S or Cayman S has been able to make up for horsepower differences from 911s for some time. With narrower differences, that is more the case than ever.

Re 991 Carrera and Carrera S with equally skilled drivers? I will bet on the car with the lower pound per horspower, and or better rubber. In back to back rides in each at a Porsche World event, I managed about 5 MPH more at the end of the one straightaway on the track segment used in an S (Sport PASM, Pirelli), over a Carrera (PASM, Goodyear).

If the differance is simply in the exhaust and ECU, I can't believe that it would cost that much to retune the 981 to the 350HP of the 991. With 35 extra HP the 981 should be at least as quick as a 991 both on the dragstrip as well as a road course. The only selling point for the 991 would be the rear seat which is a very important consideration for some.

Actually, I think the best selling point for the Boxter (any Boxter) is that it is a superb 2 seater roadster and the 991 is not. (If you want a roadster, that is).

I believe that it's more than just ECU and Exhaust. I've read that the heads are different on the 991 to make the 350HP.

Interesting. I've also wondered if the 981S could be tuned to the HP of the 991.
