Smile To 991 or Not to 991? VS SL 63AMG?

I recently placed an order for a 991 C2S Cabrio

white, red interior black roof, carrera classic wheels

premium pkg + entry and drive, ventilated seats etc

PDCC, PASM, Sport steering wheel .....

which came to around 205,000 US Dollars after taxes. This was for a November order.

In this part of the world the good life sure has its price.

After an overnight testdrive of the car, I loved it!!! and went and placed a deposit of 10,000 US.

And then, I did a totally foolish thing and test drove an R8 V10 and the SL 63 AMG.

I dont know about the US at the moment, but R8'S in Asia are having a discount due to the planned facelift of the car. The SL 63 AMG is also a 0% APR premium. And makes the 3 cars at about the same price, give or take a few pounds of rice, so to speak.

The instantaneous acceleration of the V10 and AMG machines have left me at a loss. And the AMG also has a roof that OPENS! AND a HARDTOP at that.

so the question arises, To 991 or not to 991?

Maybe waiting for the Turbo is of course the smart option. BUT I WANT MY CAR NOW!!! ^^

So, i decided to ask the venerable folk at RennList to help me put a stop to the matter at hand.

I would be most obliged for any input. Thank you in advance.

991C2S Cab and SL63 are very different cars ...

SL is about 285kgs (1845kg) heavier than the 991S Cab (1560kg). SL has suspension trickery like PDCC as standard so can corner incredibly well.

Plus that biturbo AMG V8 is awesome; 537hp (or 564 with PP) against 400hp (430 with PP) of the 991; and 800NM (900 NM with PP) and 440NM ..

Looks wise, I think the SL looks a bit bloated and slab sided.

991 is scalpel sharp and lithe, SL is more of a bruiser, but with incredible agility for its weight and size.

Tough choice.

If someone offered me a choice of either, I would pick the SL63 (with the panoramic roof) ...

Criteria..

A) Driving experience... Drive each one and come to your own conclusion. I will take the 991 any day bu the R8 is a hell of a ride, the SL being more of a straight line accleration car.

B) Comfort factor.. again.. come to your own conclusions.. but my bet is on the SL63 for you.

C) Cachet or image factor.. if this is important, perhaps you will be better served by the R8. Atleast in the part of the US I live in, a 911 attracts very little attention compared with the R8 and personally I like it that way.

My point EXACTLY.

Which is the better car??

It will be a DD. I have a 7 month old son. The wife has a Cayenne so will not be troulbeld for groceries and such.
But the SL still only has 2 seats.

a bit of a dilemma.

I truly think that the car I ordered will be my first ever Porsche. But at these prices, Is IT WORTH IT?

SL 63 991?

A) The R8 , because of the facelift factor has been deleted from the selection, with of course a little selection bias, not that the R8 V10 is not an excellent car.

The SL, I dont know about cornering. I m not going to track the car but do intend on a lively bit of driving now and then on the curvatious roads this part of the world has to offer. Straight line acceleration is more of the question for a driver ofmy onferior caliber i think.

B) Comfort factor. To be completely honest, May be Porsche has done its Marketing analysis correctly, but my comfort zone feel was absent from the 991s test drive.

the rearseat does come into play though.

C) The Sheer PRESENCE of the SL versus the 991 maybe in favor of the 991 to some. But why spend that obscene amount of money that you cant brag about , I think?

D) So, in summary if these 3 cars were of the same price in the US market, I would be most obliged to know if 991 owners would opt for any of these cars?

Let me make it simple for you..

1) 991 has a back seat custom designed for babies and toddlers in car seats. Would you not like your son to have the Porsche 911 experience ?

2) If you were to die tomorrow, would you lament having not had a mercedes or a porsche carrera in your lifetime?

Yeah.. I thought so ! You're welcome

And the latest, greatest 911 at that.

There are many reasons that the 991 is getting the acolades it is getting. There really is no substitute.

Mercs aren't even on my radar, fast but more of a German muscle car than anything. In the US an R8 V10 is much more expensive than the 991, and although I love them it's a pure 2seater with very limited utility while the 911 can easily do all kinds of driving chores.

Why not get both the Benz and the 991? Then you will have no regrets..

other than the hardtop convertible, there is nothing that I like about the SL more than a 911. The only reason that I will pass buying a 911 is if I already have another 1 or 2 at home.

I have done this before. Made the mistake of getting off the Porsche homestead where I belong, where I grew up, where my genes come from, where my birthright is, and stepped on the AMG bandwagon.
Here are the results:
A. Its a nice looking car and it has performance.
B. But its not Porsche performance. Most Mercs including AMGs are overweight, thats why they have such big HP motors which leads to the next problem:
C. You rear tires will be gone in 2-4K miles
D. Last problem, You will lose a TON of money on the resale.

My advice is to wait for your turbo as you suggest. I know that Patience is NOT a virtue that Porsche guys have in abundance, Unless your a Dr. then they have LOTS of Patients

Its hard but the 991 TT is going to be a gem. If you cant wait, the 991S is just a FREAKING GREAT car!!!
I rode in one yesterday and the fit and the performance is just as best I have ever seen in a 911.

So here is my experience with Resale on my 3 911s
1997 Twin Turbo Bought $70K Sold $72 (1 year 2 mos)
2004 911 GT3 bought for $95K sold for $89 (1 year 3 mos)
2007 911 GT3 bought for $124 Sold to a DEALER for $115K (1 year 6 mos)
2009 911S Bought for $78K sticker was 103K Still have it.

Buy a 911 and dont look back I hardly have every seen a Merc at the track
