Default Tire Manufacture for 991

I was told that the selected tire manufacture for the 991 was Pirelli but then read this (see below), making me think I should have ordered the 20" wheels over the stock 19's in the Carrera Cab. Since I am not going to track this car, I thought 19's would be fine, however this article has me rethinking my stance.

BTW...A lot of you purchased the S over the Carrera...Me...I just couldn't spend $130k on the cab vs $111k for the regular Carrera Cab. The .2 to .3 second difference was not worth 15k.

I bought my car with the 20" Carrera Classic wheels but bought an aftermarket set of 19" HRE and Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I find the ride is better, the tires are better in the rain and slightly better on the track. Going with 19" wheels is not a bad decision.

I went with 19s. At first I was a dismayed and thought i made the wrong decision - thinking that the 19s looked a bit small. But now I am totally cool with it. Why I went with 19s? Despite being a bit smaller, I thought the 19s being offered were the best style rims Porsche has. Also, the 20s look a bit too big. The biggest negative of the 19s is the Goodyear tires!!! Feel soft.

Your link wouldn't come up for me, but I have the 20" wheels and like them, they "fit" the new larger bodystyle perfect to me (subjective I know) but I am surprised with all the knocks Porsche is getting for moving up to 20" tires. I won't be tracking this car so the 20's are fine and look great.

Congrats on your new Porsche by the way, enjoy it!

Bugati Veyron: 20" on front, 21" rear. Can't recall anybody complaining about that one...

20" on the 991 ? Just perfect...

Why would 20" wheels/tires not be good for track use?

There is no reason suggested and I believe noe to be found. It may be tha t19s are cheaper to replace frequently- as would need to be done by very serious trackers. They would likely go for the lighest aftermarket wheels as well- but I have seen no actual data on weights- just specualtion. It is good when reading these posts to understand that serious trackers do a good bit of suspension tuning and care little about tire wear- so it is not useful to generailze from their experience.

Yah but Veyron is a much bigger car than 991, no? And heavier. Makes sense to have the bigger rims. Fits better. No?

Default Arent 20's heavier?

Depends on the tire. Total unsprung weight depends on wheel/tire combination. The effect of unsprung weight varies according to a host of suspension variables. The variance across all variables overwhems tire size in affecting performance.
