To track or not to track that is the question..

Guys I have a 2001 996 which i have spent quite a few $$ making it track worthy. A couple of months ago traded my 997.1S for a 991S and could not be happier with the switch, but there is this little voice on the left that says lets track this thing see what it does and the right says " Don't do it man its dangerous".
If I had the power to just take on track and not beat the crap out of it I would in a heart beat, but knowing my competitive side I would no tolerate that first person trying to pass me without going into full race mode.
Sooner or later I think the curiosity of really finding out what a 991S is all about will take me to a track with it. During my last track event I spun out pretty spectacular with the 996 and didn't even flinch or loose sleep over it. Luckily didn't break anything on the car or on me, but just thinking of that happening with my new baby would probably make me loose some sleep.
Lets see what happens

It's not clear to me whether you're running with an instructor on track, or whether the group is loose enough that you're free to get into trouble without seeing what's happening. If you run with a Porsche club and stay with the program, I'd have little hesitancy in taking the new baby on the track and seeing what she (and you) can do together.

I've done over a dozen track days in my 991S in a little over 3 months. I never had this much fun with my m3. I've got another 6 track days scheduled. Get out there with a good group and don't look back!

Go for it! I just ordered a 991 coupe and have a couple of months to wait. I have never tracked my own car before but definitely intend to with this one. Sure it will be nerve racking at first but that is part of the buzz! Think I will join Porsche Club GB and do one of their track days as suggested above and I am sure some hand holding from a instructor will be really helpful at first!

I have a 993 C2S which is too much of a classic in my mind that I won't bring it near a track. On the other hand I bought a 991S which I have taken to two PCA Driver's Ed events (so far and more to come) and have had an absolute blast discovering the 'split personalities' this car has: in addition to an excellent daily driver, smooth GT (cruiser) on the highway, it's also a 'blow away everything in its path' on the track. Go for it! You'll regret it if you don't...
By the way at my first DE event (Metro NY) was a guy driving a 993 C2S on the track...I was in awe...

Have fun with it.. Do it... These are among the few cars that you can take from the showroom to the track (brake pads & fluid aside if you are pushing).

After a back-to-back test drive at the track of the 991 base and S, I can see how these latest models can be fun at the track. Having said this, I have some personal rules with regards to race/track cars: track a car that is fully setup for safety, reliability, etc. and track a car in which I'm willing to accept a mishap i.e. crash.
I'm considering a 991 for daily driver duties. If/when I buy one, I would also be tempted to take the car on a track event and drive at 7-8/10ths, just to appreciate the car even more. However, I wouldn't race it. For one thing, it's still a street car. Secondly, your comment about loosing sleep could be an indicator.
