991 Seven Speed Manual
Hello Everyone,
I had an opportunity the other day to spend about 20 minutes driving the only 991 7-speed manual my dealer had. I currently have a 997.1 6-speed manual and a couple of things struck me - so wanted to get insights from any of you that have driven the 991 manual.
1. At first, the position of the shifter seemed a bit too high for me - it took some getting used to - but after the drive, I seemed to like the higher position. There is definitely less motion needed to get your hand to and from the shifter and the steering wheel.
2. The shifter seemed very notchy to me. The car had 78 miles on it, so it may be an issue of still being new, but the shift action was not that smooth. Seemed like the gates are very close together and maybe this is because it is a modified PDK transmission. Even my dealer noticed this. Maybe it is supposed to give you that short shifter feel - but having driven a manual all my life, it really took to the end of the test drive to get smooth shifts.
Overall - I won't repeat what many of you have already mentioned. The new car is very comfortable, almost un-Porsche like - but can get aggressive when you want it to. It is really nice, and I like the interior and overall look (it is better in person than in pictures in my opinion). However, there was just a more raw feel when I got back into my 997. They are BOTH great cars...
Anyway - any insights would be appreciated. When the time comes for a 991, I really want a manual - I guess I just have to get used to the new feel...

See if you can find one to test. Also PDCC, which some feel is "unnatural" is also very effective. I don't have that but have driven a car with it - it makes almost too fast almost too easy.

My 991 MT shifts much more smoother than my previous 997 MT. In fact, in the 997 there was always a hint of coarseness going from 1st to 2nd, but that is not the case in the 991. In the 991 shifting is very smooth in all gears.
I also had to adapt to the new shifter location in the 991. I now like the location of the shifter in the 991 better as well.

I find my 991s MT shifts very smooth compared to my former 993. The higher shifter is a big plus as well. The gates are closer together, but it only took a few hundred miles to get accustomed to that. After 3200 miles so far, I am sure glad I didn't go with an auto box Porsche.

I love the way the new tranny ****s. The throws are short and precise. The feel of the gear selector in your hand is also very comfortable, more so than other MT cars I've had over the years. Perfect size, IMHO. I do not regret it and recommend it highly.

Thank you everyone for your comments - I think I'll go back and try it again. It was just not smooth at all - very notchy. The dealer tried it and stated the same thing - maybe something was just off with that unit.

Early reports from journalists mentioned notchy shifters, but most of the recent ones complemented the smoothness. So may be unit or adjustment (transmission or attitude).

I went from a 997.1 manual to my 991S Manual and the difference in the position of the manual IMO was no big deal ... I think I noticed when I first got in and then after a few stop lights I never noticed it again. BTW I was the first manual the dealer had so I never tired it before the day I picked it up (I ordered it site unseen)
I also did notice my car feels smoother than ever at 1300 miles ... all of a sudden things felt just 'broken in ' beautifully !!
A test drive of a brand new car never gives you the full feel because everything is too tight and needs to be broken in ...
I can say after owning A LOT of Manual's this one is THE BEST.
It still amazes me when I get into it and the more I drive it the better this car feels ... I can't wait to hit around 3,000 miles as from past experience this is when my cars start feeling the best !!!

Being that the new transmission is based off of PDK does the clutch pick up point feel any different than a normal manual? Also do you still have the ability to slip the clutch (Not that this is a good thing) or is it an on/off type of feel?
