Side mirrors. Form or function?
Anybody know any advantage to having the side mirrors come out of the doors vs the the corner of the a-pillar? I see no functional advantage over this design change. Any one have a thought on this?

Two things: Better pedestrian vision required by European law and less wind noise and thus less wind resistance. It's the same reason you now see that on Corvette, Ferrari 458, Panamera, Camaro, Cayenne and all new cars under development that are intended for a world market.

I'm think'in change for the sake of change...especially since they kept the "mirror triangles" anyway! Historically, older Porsche models (and most other cars) did have door mounted mirrors and it seems this layout would be slightly more expensive and complex to do. Porsche probably figured the new look was worth the few bucks more!

At the Cayenne training in Leipzig last year, it was explained that the mirrors were moving down to the doors because EU law was requiring them to be larger and they would reduce driver angle vision if they remained on the A-pillars.

Ok. Makes sense. Tx. The do look more complex to install and it bugs me that they've left the corner black triangle in the a-pillar. Why not extend the glass all the way to the corner? I think the door could handle it.
