I personally think it's a nice idea. When you have THAT many gears, it's good to have another visual backup. Sometimes I'm wondering what gear I'm in and have to change it to be sure. They could have been doing this years ago.

The photos are outstanding. The article also cites a couple of nice roads for Porsche yanking and banking that we locals know about--State routes 166 and especially 33. (33 has some fairly high elevations and is the first in the area to experience ice).

yes its nice especially since it's on the tach on CENTER. I recall groveling shortly after getting my 997 that the PDK grear inidcator should have been placed in the center. I think my whining paid off!

Separately yall see the "cons" in the review?

"What Needs Work (cons):

Electric power steering not perfect, engine is hidden from view Boxster style, bogus cupholders "

Cupholders WTF? Who cares.

The hidden engine is a BIG deal for me.

Gear Indicator on a manual transmission is not unique to Porsche. I just picked up 2012 VW Passat SE TDI and it has the indicator as well - with its 6-speed manual. I like having it.

"Hidden engine" is a negative, but I'd guess the cover with fans (or another part) is removable. I can't imagine having to drop the engine to replace the oil filter, which sits on top.

OIL Change price for 991:

8 qt @ $10/ = $80
Filter = $30
Labor (3hrs to remove fan, wiring, and housing) @ $125/ = $375
Shop supplies, taxes, other= $15

TOTAL: $500

This is not an actual service dept's quote, right? Just a joke?

I pay the same $179 for dealer oil changes on my Spyder as I did on my 997. It is all accessed from below.

The have a filler that is accessible on top and I suspect they made the oil filter accessible from underneath. The one I am really wondering about is changing an air filter is now an engine out procedure?

Oil definitely must be accessible somehow... but I am also wondering about other maintenance and how it can be performed without access to engine! What is that cover/fan is removable easily for maintenance? The opening is quite smaller so regardless it will be way more difficult to work on the engine than before.

You have to remove the engine-compartment blowers and then there is enough room to do the oil filter change.
It's very easy.
I will post about it in the "Technical Information" thread.
