"Porschephiles may have been wondering at what point their beloved 911 ceases to be a 911 and becomes just a good sports car with an engine in the trunk. That day may have arrived." - Car & Driver.

I agree.

Without driving it?

I'm gonna wait until they lend me one for 24 hours and give it a real try myself. Just need to manufacture a warranty claim on my GTS.

Great idea to start this! It should be cemented at the top of the 991 section.

I really look forward to the C and D reviews as being among the best/unbiased. They even comment on the resources P put into this launch. This review did not seem nearly as enthusiastic as for the 997 when it came out.

Automobile Magazine, with reference to the electromechanical steering:

"...you'll know why the 911 is a better car, but it's not a better 911."

'Nuff said.

Automobile Mag also gives the real reason for the switch to electric power steering: complaints from drivers about the instability of the car, especially at high speeds, compared to cars like the R8.

For example, from Automobile Mag's excellent article:

Poke the engineers long enough, and they'll admit that they received complaints about the 997's steering being too nervous. It transmitted too much, they say. Specifically, too much vibration and too many "disruptions." Those disruptions -- to the vehicle's path, presumably -- are bad engineering. They are old-fashioned and needed to be removed. Or at least that's what the engineers believed.

On another note, the R8 beat the 997 in most every review. Porsche needs to turn that around.

Overall positive although for some the jury still seems to be out on the electric steering.
