The 991 base should be eliminated in my opinion. I don't see its point. Why would one get it? It should be just the carrera s variants, and step up should be the turbos. Gts are fine for the tracksters.

Then Porsche would eliminate alot of its 911 client base. They sell alot of base Carrera's for the price point its at.

Not everyone wants an S for the extra $$$ it brings.

It is largely psychology and marketing trying to squeeze more $$$ out of pockets. You have to be satisfied with what you are driving or you'll always be unhappy.

The base 911 is going to be a fantastic car, but the 'S', then GT3, then Turbo, then Turbo S, then GT2 will be even better, as always.

I'll probably by a non 'S' based on my 25k annual mileage. It will exceed my needs, depreciation will be less. Talk to non Porsche people and they can't tell a difference, if it matters...
Good points, but who cares what non-Porsche people know. I would know when driving it or when looking at it; that's what matters, what the buyer thinks and feels. Point is you CAN definitively see and feel the difference between the two cars. For a Porsche enthusiast that matters. Of course if a lot of mileage and less than excited driving is the key, go base Carrera. It just would not work for me. With that said, a Cayman, or M3 has more than most drivers can deliver, so why even move up from there. This bantering about a car's capabilities vs driver ability is ridiculous. Most cars are more exploitable than driver capable but that does not change desire or usability. The S is the better car, whether one chooses it is another story. For some it may be bragging rights, for more not so much. If one drives like Ms Daisy then they would not know the difference between the two. If one drive it like a sports car, another story..

I don't think that's necessarily true in the US. There seem to be a lot more 997 S models on the road than 997 base models. My dealer also told me they sell far fewer base models than S models.

For what it is worth, I am probably ordering a base 991. Perhaps I'll upgrade to a turbo in a few years, but the S doesn't bring me much over the base for my use.

The base 991 with 7 speed and one option....PASM.

Doubt most of us can get to 8/10ths of the cars potential.

If you're going to track it more than 2x a year, get the S. Whatever you do forget the stereo upgrade. I love the full leather in my 997 - it unique and balances out the experience somehow. A bit of plush with all the rush. PDK is another major call - again refer line 1, else just get the multifunction wheel and drive around twiddling

After owning several Porsches with way too many options, I would go for the minimalist approach.

The base 991 is a heck of a car as-is. Unless you are tracking a car on a regular basis (and once or twice a year do not qualify as regular in my book), I can do without all the "P_whatever" options.

I am a cab person, so the convertible is a must-have option for me. Here would be my config:
* Base 991 (manual transmission) $83k
*Convertible $10k (estimate)
* Black Metallic paint (Basalt, the same as my current 997)
*heated/vent seats (heated seats are needed to drive the convertible with top down when temp is as low as 45 degrees; vent seats to drive in the summer). $1.3k

So there you have it: less than $85 for a hard top; less than $95k for a convertible.

uncertain about the 991, but on 997 the "S" certainly brings bragging rights that you might want to consider

bigger brakes, bigger wheels, more power/motor, better suspension, sits lower

you will not meet a person with an S that wished they had bought the base. never.

does anyone know when PTS order can be placed?

Just curious-anyone have an idea what the general price difference is on a base vs. S after 5 years? The 997 was about $15k new. I would think after 5 years, the difference is about $5k?

Default Here they are - 30 991s on the track

I posted this earlier this week - after hearing them up close the sports exhaust is a MUST ... All the blacks ones were sport chrono with the sports exhaust and dash chrono etc...

I think full leather is the best option, it really make the car a premium luxury car.

spending 90k on a car with plastic dashboard...hum...

You might be right if you are looking for a "premium luxury car".
Others may just want a sports car and will happily do without the luxury. :-)

Alstoy:

Google'd 2006 Carrera Base and S MSRP and got $71,300/$81,400.

The latest Galves (wholesale pricing only) price guide shows a 2006 C2 wholesale/trade-in value set at $33,000-$34,700 and a 2006 C2S at $38,000-$39,800. Both with 46K miles allowed and no options added.

KBB (Kelley Blue Book) has the 2006 C2 at wholesale/trade-in at $33,312-$38,312 and the C2S at $40,301-$46,101. At the private-sale the vaue for the C2 is at $36,427-$41,427 and the C2S at $43,591-$49,391. Both with 46K miles allowed and no options added.

Quite a discrepancy in pricing but probably due to condition sensitivity.

Well, 90k+ car can be missing a lot of other things than just a leather dashboard.... such as sunroof, auto dimming mirrors, rear view camera (not even available!), parking sensors, folding mirrors, key-less start!!!!!!

For my DD purposes, I like the base Carrera with PDK, heated seats and steering wheel, and a roof rack. All together, MSRP is just under $90K.

I'll use other cars for nice weather street driving and for the track.
