I must say its a bit odd seeing the 997 guys all upset that the NEWER model is faster and arguably "better" but somehow lack the "soul" of the older car. As though no car should have ever eclipsed the current one. Same was said when the SC/3.2 came out, and again when the 964 came out.. then the 993.. then the 996.. and yet ALL of these cars are great cars.. and each sucessive one was "better" overall than its predecessor.

Quite whining, wait till you drive one, and then let us know how quickly you want to sell your 997

While it is true that only time will tell whether the 991 is a "great" car, it is not necessarily the case that each successive 911 has "better" overall than its predecessor. There are strong arguments that the 993 was a "great" car while the 996 was not. Similarly the 3.2 cars with G50 trans were not bested by the 964. So we will see how the 991 does over time.

In the meantime it is perfectly legitimate to point out the pros and the cons from our vantage point now. For example, I will wager that the electronically assisted steering remains a soar point for years after the car is released. Moreover, there is no redeeming value , functional or aesthetic, for the silly console. Please don't tell me that the shifter will be closer to the wheel as if that will be an advantage with PDK and paddle shifters on the steering wheel! Maybe some of the new patrons will assume that huge console ascending upward is necessary to accommodate the transmission bell housing they are accustomed to in their caddies?

Hey, not to mention aesthetics. Now I know aesthetics is purely subjective, but when the 997 came out I fell immediately in love with it. I’m still in love with it. The 991 doesn’t tickle my groin yet; maybe it eventually will, but it doesn’t do it for me now.
My 997.2 C4S has an a$$ of a 17 year old, Brazilian supermodel. The 991’s a$$ is more like mine—middle aged and pimpled.

Aah, don't jump on him. All of us have our "last real Porsche". For me, it's clearly the 930, for my father, anything after the 70s is for ham-fisted clods (but of course, he owns a 993). It's something of a foolish sentiment, but aren't we all susceptible to it?

no. there is no such thing as a "real porsche". Every vehicle that leaves the porsche assembly line with a porsche badge is a real porsche. From 924 to 968 to 991.

The fact that he selected the 6 GT3 as his "last real porsche" also confuses me, but since its a silly statement anyway, I digress.

Wouldn't a 997.2 gt3 also be a true driver's car with PSM/TC disabled?

Whatever, I agree lets see the car perform in person. And we won't all agree, but all Porsches are real. The 996 was a serious step up from the 993 in all aspects of performance, and its sales tell part of the tale, much lke the 997, that people did indeed like the car looks and all. I dont get all the hate on model years, each one is good, just pick the one for you. BTW I think my guards red 996 c4s looks as good as any 997 (turbo and GT cars excluded).
Glad to see Porsche trying to improve and not resting on the crest.

Do you really believe the 993 was an advance on the 993 ????
