factually yes. Better psm, bigger brakes, more advanced 4awd, more powerful liquid cooled, faster in straight line, on tracks, more comfortable etc. it has its issues (way overblown) but so do 993's. i think 993 's are awesome cars, with great motors, but the 996 was the all new next gen, 997 improved on that and so on. I like them all. Evolution of the legend. 991 looks to be the same.

991 looks like it evolved from the 996, and the 997 looks like it evolved from the 993.
therefore, 992 should be nirvana.

+1. Skipping 991; can't wait for 992 (or whatever it will be called). Seems that just like ugly kids skipping a generation so is the 911.

i too don't really subscribe to using pretty nasty words to describe an inanimate, material object, but i guess it's cool that some show so much ummm passion for the brand?

out of every gen since the 964, i can pick out some favs. out of the 996, i love the mk1 Gt3, the aerokitted carreras,c4s and the gt2. incredible stuff and more of the same with the 991. the best looking gen ever in my books already.

With every new model, Porsche seems intent on making sure less and less of the driver's input gets in the way of... driving.

911s or any Porsche is not really an every day car. Ok they are verstile enough to be used every day, but they are about driving dynamics first and everyday comfort second. To me driving dynamics are about connectivity. That means being connected to chassis at all times. Power... power is easy with big enough motor, but feel of connetion of the driver to the car to the road is special. It is what has made Porsche special. Not our right speed, but connetion. Cars like te 959 have be shockingly fast, but somehow disconnected. However it seems like every year Porsche is moving so that driver is less in control of the car an the compuer is in control more and more. Electric steering may have a host of benefits, but what purpose do they have a on sports car? Driver feel? How many 911 owners over the years love the manual steering on cars like the 964 RSA? The feel of road was superior to the mechical power racks. Now we have computer controlled steering, computer controlled throttle, computer controlled suspension, computer controlled brakes, comptuer controlled transmissions...

In many way it shows how shocking the Carrera GT was and still is. A wicked fast car with a minimum of electronc gadgets.

Where is the basic drivers car.

Linear Power steering (no varible ratio stuff), steel suspension, manual box, no traction control, no stability control, and just ABS. (although a non ABS car that saved weight might be nice). I am ok with engine electronics as the driver never really controlled even in the days of carbs.

The car you want is a Boxster Spyder or a Cayman R with the PSM switched off.

The PSM cannot be switched off, just temporarily disabled. It turns on again, by itself.

Yes it is... Cayman R in white however as I don't really care for open topped cars.

I should not however be the exception in the Porsche line up.
