I actually dont think the 991 makes the 997.2 look dated. My wife could barely tell the difference between the two on a side by side shot. She said it looks just like your car but the back looks a bit different. Unless you drive the car and know Porsche, most peopled dont, the cars look very similar. We, on the other hand, analyze these pics to death. When it comes down to it, they all look like a 911 with some evolution. In my view, it will take a few more years to make the 997.2 "look dated" - especially with fully loaded features. When you spend $100,00 plus for a car, its hard to make it look dated b/c most people will still have their jaws drop when they see it.
Just look at some of the other evolutions that have occured with other cars. For instance, the new versus prior model Range Rover Sport, SL 500, BMW 6 Series etc....All these care have a modest level of changes to the exterior and interior recently. To me, none of them look dated. Still love seeing the prior models. I view the change in the 911 the same.

Looks perfect. One thing I never really like about the 997.2 rear lights was it looked like a design detail that was forced in to make it look newer inspired by the Lambo Reventon. I later noticed it was the same detail from the last cayenne's rear lights.
Love the new 991. At least from the second pic, the headlights look a little more longer, 917-like. I initially didn't like the PORSCHE lettering on the cayenne and panamera but now I love it on my cayenne. I always liked it on the RANGE ROVER. It's a nice daily reminder: it's a PORSCHE damn it. The full "911 Carrera S" treatment still has to grow on me.

The rear badging is beyond ridicoulus.... someone noted it already I know but come on, PORSCHE in block caps, then 911 in case people weren't sure and then Carrera and then the specific model? Many things I will wait to see in person and form my my decision after a test flight but I can tell for sure if this badging stays I don't need to wait to know it looks bad....

This car is gorgeous and I want one. For everyone who is saying it is too big, doesn't look good, bad interior, blah blah blah. I think you are just trying to rationalize keeping your wonderful 997 instead of dropping 120K on a new 911. You know you want one. Yes...you do.
Like they say, don't ever mess with a man's woman and his car. I love what they did with the 991. It's going to look even crazier in person. Lower slung and visually longer than the teensy 2" due to eye tricks.
I want to see some shots of the widebody. It's going to be insane!

With the great affection, no - devotion is a better word, Porsche lovers have for the 356, 930, 964 and 993 (ok even the 996 has it's fans) I find worries about the 997 being "dated" pretty funny. I am already visualising future reviews lamenting the last of the "short wheelbase" 911's, you know the ones with the real handbrake

Great comparison, thanks for sharing. The changes are subtle, and as others as stated won't be noticed by the casual observer. It's still very much a 911. The gentle "swoop" of the door creates a nice effect. It's a beautiful car. Technological advances will result in a better performance over 997's, although my new 408hp 997 GTS will still give the 991 fits. I hope that nothing is lost in translation though, i.e. electric vs hydrauic assisted steering, increased wheelbase, new interior, etc., but I don't think so. Give Porsche credit, their track record , no pun intented, speaks for itself. I can easily see myself in a 991.2 or perhaps 991 GT3 in a couple of years.
