They were/are a problem in the new Porsche DFI engine as well, I had a DFI failure on a 2009 C4S.

So is the 9A1 engine reliable and durable for track use/abuse?

All I have to go off of is mdrums and I running the C2S. Absolutely no problems whatsoever with the cars, and to be honest, the lower torque coupled with a really nice linear powerband made it a real fighter for .1 GT3's....

Cayman Interseries seems to be happy with it...

I think the non S Cayman and Boxster engines do not have the DFI. Only the S engines do. No IMS though and 4 oil pumps or like.

Lets be real honest

sure the C2 S is strong, and a real fighter against the "rumblebee"

I think that was more driver than car

But $110K, that's still crazy money compared to a GT3 and $120K+ compared to a 2011 GT3 RS unless you absolutely positively have to have rear seats. In which case, just get an '09 C2S, deal with a bit less power and pay maybe $70K? The wide body and power kit are not to be sniffed at, but for $50K? Hardly compelling. And I wonder how road car daily driver folks will feel about those bloody centerlocks. : )

Pete: to clarify - a DFI pump failure, correct?

I had a DFI Cayman S before the GT3 and tracked it quite a bit. The torture test I think was the AAA Speedway Roval where you're putting as much banked high G loading on the engine. The .1 CS motors would tend to go boom in similar situations due to cavitation and oil starvation. Not the .2. Zero issues with mine other than a HPFP replaced at about 4K miles. 17K miles when I sold it. Not exactly a torture test but a good indication they can take track conditions. I'm very curious to see if Porsche puts the 9A1 in the 991 GT3.

I understand the discussion about making the engine competitive, but the reliability? Why is that in the discussion? The engine has been in constant testing for the last 5 years, at least. Porsche abuses the cars and engines over the span of 5 years much harder than any track day or motorsports event will. Porsche knows what they're doing. They wouldn't cancel the Mezger engine if they knew the 9A1 couldn't do the job.

And I know there really isn't any correlation, but the most successful LMP2 car of all time was a DFI Porsche.

I tracked the heck out of my 2009 C2S....only warranty claim was a cracked weld on a header.

9A1 is a sweet engine. Yeah I'd rather have a GT3 but most of you know why I dont....but I have faith in the 9A1 for the future GT3 in being a sweet engine with lots of power and fewer issues.
