Here's why the 991 will be a great car

I use my 911 as my daily drive and ONLY CAR, I use it to pickup groceries, go shopping, goto restaurants, take on long road trips, enjoy the backroad twisties, goto the beach, go up the mountain road in winter passing SUVs (with winter tires and AWD), to TRACK as many times as I can, and to take TWO 6'3 buddies home after they got a bit too drunk to drive!
That's WHY 911 is SPECIAL! You can do ALL OF THE ABOVE fairly well with it, it's the most fun way to get around in a vehicle to do whatever you need to do. It is FANTASTIC!

Me two! what's wrong with fetching groceries in your 911 btw?

Me three.
I think the 991 will be a great car simply because it's a Porsche and Porsche know what they're doing. There has never been an incarnation of the 911 that I have not wanted - even the 996 - it may have been my least favourite but it's still a 911 and I still wanted it when it was the latest model.

From what I've seen so far of the 991, I'm actually more interested in Porsche's current last of the line 997 specials. My lust level for a Speedster or GT3/GT2 RS is very high. Too bad I don't have a bank account to match. The GTS (or maybe a GT3) is what I would buy, if I were in the market for a new 911 today.

Yup, and not a skinny 6'3 either! If you're too drunk to get home, a ride in the back of a 911 is the best ride home! Only one guy in the back though... they flipped a coin to see who goes in the back. Getting him in was easy, getting him out, not so much

No problem. Gotta lean over from side to side and you can last in that position for a good amount of time. Put your legs and rear end in the "seat" behind the front passengers seat and have them move it forward some.

Your friends are telling you that the 911 is "a useless 2 seater"? What, are they into mini-vans or SUVs or something? Clearly you need new friends with different priorities!!

This is quite a common layout for front engined sports cars. It keeps more of the weight within the wheelbase and results in a more even overall weight distribution. If they tried this in a 911, the transmission would displace the pcm/center console and they would have to build in longer driveshafts from the engine to the transmission and back to the rear wheels. It would be more weight overall. Better to move the wheels out a little toward the corners of the car. Which appears to be what they're doing.

By the way - I always wanted a Porsche, since I was probably 7-8 years old, so there is no way 911-991 will be bad - it will simply be the best Porsche ever made - simple.

I keep on finding pics of the 991 on the net, and I'm wondering:
1-does anybody reckon 991 could have the engine and the transmission mounted on top of each other - and moved forward, almost in-between the rear wheels.
2-does anybody reckon the transmission could be oriented laterally - in between the rear wheel drive shafts, and the engine moving forward - still positioned at the rear, just moved as far forward as possible.
Car is suppose to have a wider track also - this could help with packaging the tranny bit better, making the whole powerpack's CofG closer to the rear axle centreline.
On the net pics of the prototype the 991 rear end looks really short so it seems very hard to actually fit the engine there in the same configuration as the 997.

I guess I just don't understand the motivation. If a person thinks that the 911 has been such a fundamentally flawed car for the past 50 years why on earth do they want one in the first place? There are plenty of already mid-engined cars on the market if that's what you want to buy. Why hope that Porsche turns a rear engine car into a mid engine car?
