Thoughts on 991...
Here's an artist rendering of the newest 911,--the 991 internally. Thoughts? There is some talk that with the fading global economy the "991" will ultimately be no more than a 997.3 facelift.

Since the Research and Development cycle is already complete for the 991, it would appear that any change to the basic final content of the vehicle would not benefit Porsche....As most of the RD was completed prior to the financial crisis...I think the 991 will be released as intended....I do believe that Porsche will find a way to strip some standard options off the base model and make them available as options to increase the bottom line....911 sales will continue to do well, I do think Porsche is going to have a tremendous challenge with the rest of the product line remaining cash cows...I saw a cayman s at the dealership for @80K...I cannot imagine the Cayman ever being a 80K vehicle..its' image does not support the price.
Off subject...I have been impressed with Audi during the past 3 years...their products have really hit a sweet spot(R8, RS4, A8) They remind me of BMW during the last 90's and early 2000...
I am excited to get the new 991...I think it will be a great vehicle!

First off take the drawing with a large pinch of salt - about as much as you can fit into the Dead Sea. At this stage a lot of the body work is still being developed. Start looking more closely about a year from now at the EP's that get filmed in the wild.
Second 991 was developed before the acquisition of VAG, so while the R&D costs may have been paid for, savings that could be made from greater sharing of components with say Audi or Lamborghini are not there.
I suspect that 991 will be the equivalent of 964: a very short lived model with a lot of new technology in it that can quickly be more economically productionized through component set sharing with other companies in the group. Taking a modular approach to the structural component set as pioneered by Lotus using Audi's next A8, R8, R5, etc as the base for Cayenne 3, Panamera 2, Panamera 928, and 982/992 might be a very smart way to give flexibility and save money.

I know I am boring...but I would be OK if they never changed the outside of the car styling again...how do you improve upon perfection? I still have to turn my head and look back every time I walk away from this car...love it!

The Porsche designers apparently feel the same way as you do. Not exactly a clean-sheet design, just more of the same good thing. Until you turn it around and see that they put square headlights on it.

My thoughts...the 991 can't change much. We now know the drivetrains, perhaps with steadily increasing displacement. The pricing can't change much; the basic 911s are bound on the high end by the R8 and upcoming Panamera coupe, and on the low end by the Boxster/Cayman. Obviously design won't change much. Improvements will likely come from lighter components to increase performance, fuel economy, and reduce emissions, as well as more refined electronics for suspension, steering, traction management, etc. Hopefully they don't go as far as the GT-R in removing analog feedback.

I'm with you. I love the look of the 997 and hope that any changes will be evolutionary. The 911 is a timeless design.

What was expected to be new in it? The 997.2 already has a state of the art DFI motor, PDK gearbox, updated cockpit electronics, etc. What was expected to be "all new" in the 991?

FWIW, there is a rumor that Porsche will use the new VW roadster as a platform for a 21st century 356. If they keep it very sparse (manual seats, no nav, etc.) and put the old-look body on it, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
