Default Buying advice?

Hey guys. Like many, the Porsche 911 is my dream car. Specifically the Cabriolet.

Unfortunately for me my budget is tight with four kids and three of those in college (and my wife wants another!).

We already have a MB EQS 580 and a 21 Tundra so we are pretty set with cars for regular transportation. The EQS 580 is a blast I have to say.

I got CRC cancer last year - fortunately beat it with the help of MD Anderson and LOTS of prayers. Getting cancer really made me appreciate how short life could be and it can happen at any moment.

I have two Harley’s they I need to sell and my garage will have a very empty place that I feel would be perfect for a 991 Cab.

Budget? Maybe $40-60k.

I’ve been watching BaT and the marketplace here and C&B. I’ve been scanning all the usual places. I spend way too much time on Porsche Finder.

Any suggestions? Anyone have one they are willing to reduce to make a dream come true?

I’m reaching out hoping someone has been where I am now and might share some tips with me. I was tempted to get a Panamera but I know my heart is always going to want the 911 Cab.

I've been around that price range for both of my 911s. If I had to do a rough list of steps, I'd say:
  1. First figure out what you want. 60k can get you a 991.1 with a clean title, few or no accidents, no non-OE/OE+ mods, fewer specs (good luck getting sport chrono, PASM, and PSE), and mileage in the 50-70k range. It'll likely be a C2. If you want higher trim, more options, and/or CPO, expect to pay more.
  2. Setup automated alerts on all the major platforms (Porsche, cars, carfax, etc) and then also check them. Excluding the guy who I sold my last 991.1 to on Rennlist, I'd say it's unlikely you'll find your car on Rennlist. FWIW I look for out of state to get a better deal.
  3. Stay on top of it and enjoy the hunt. Always do a PPI at a local indy shop (EVEN FOR CPOs!!!*). If the dealer says they can't let someone take the car off-site, run. And be prepared to walk away if the PPI comes up funny.
* See my first 991.1 story to learn more.

And for heaven's sake, definitely do not get a panamera if you want a 911. Get. That. 911 cab.

Congratulations on your recovery.... Two quick comments/observations for you:

1) whatever you do, don't sell your '21 Tundra. You'll regret it and never be able to replace it with anything other than another 2nd gen Tundra. Of all the dozens of vehicles i've sold, from daily drivers, to utility vehicles, to sports cars, to collectibles.... my '21 Tundra Pro is the one I miss most.

2) you can relatively easily find a sub-60k cab 991.1 with higher miles that is well maintained and ready for years of enjoyment.... also 997.1/2, or 996. Maybe even a 1.2 if the miles don't scare you. A little more challenging if you want 3 pedals, but if you're happy with a tip or pdk, there are plenty out there.

Yes, thanks NA2. 991.1 is the newest gen I think you can get for 60k and those specs. Older generations can definitely be had and at higher trims. I know someone hunting for a higher mileage 997 Turbo and it was in the same ballpark as my lower mileage base 991.1.

Another issue I have is my size. I’m 6’1” but have a long torso. I’m also just over 300lbs (but down from 440 and keep dropping). I think the older generations might be too small. Not with the top down of course!

Thanks! I feel better than I have in years!

1) Won’t be selling the Tundra. Ever.

2) I’d love a stick shift, but that might be a lot harder to find. I wonder how I could find a well maintained but high mileage 997.1/2 CAB for a price in my budget. The one thing I do have on my side is patience. I’m also willing to do a bit of work if needed. I would also enjoy learning about these cars by getting my hands dirty if needed to find one within my budget. Maybe there are less expensive but time consuming issues I could handle where an older owner may no longer want the hassle. Just thinking out loud.

Default If you like riding bikes

Buy a stick. Price range for a low milage well sorted car puts you in a 997.2. I would search for the 2009 or newer and you may even find an S model (different motor/brakes). Be prepared to spend a year looking but also put a deposit down on something juicy immediatly. Always buy with a PPI to include a paint meter reading on all quarters. Private sellers are preferable to joes used cars.

I just completed my search for a manual S coupe which was like finding a unicorn. I did daily searches on all the usual sites - on here, classic.com, cargurus, autotrader, pcarmarket, cars & bids, BaT, autotempest.... Some others I'm probably forgetting. Found mine on classic.com.

Be willing to travel for the right car. I'm in NC and bought mine in Ft Worth, TX. I flew down and drove it 1200 miles home.

Similar boat to you- 2 of 3 kids in college, youngest just started driving. I sure as hell ain't having any more, though! lol. My 2016 Sequoia had been my DD since 2017 and I'm never selling that beast. It is the do-everything vehicle.

Good luck in your search! Be patient and don't settle!

Congrats! I’m just about in Fort Worth! If I had known I would have gladly driven it home for you. Possibly even your home.

I am definitely looking nationwide. Can anyone tell me why I can’t post a Want To Buy listing in the marketplace? Seems like I can do everything else.

Would joining PCA be helpful?

I agree with the comments above. A 997.2 should be on your list in addition to a 991.1. You’ll likely be able to find a 997 with more optional equipment in your price range compared to a 991 if that matters to you. One thing that I will mention though is that the cabriolet top and wind deflector design in the 991 cars is a huge improvement over the 997 cars.

The interior of the 997 series is slightly smaller than the 991 series, but not as much as it may seem. I’m 6’4” and I comfortably fit in the 997 and the 991.

Perfect! I will broaden my search for 997.2.

Classic.com is great. I had never been on there.
