Hello. I purchased 991.2 Carrera S back in June of last year. This is my first Porsche, and I have tried to make informed decisions and do my research on all aspects of ownership. I purchased the car with 20,000 miles, and I'm now sitting at about 25,000 miles. In that time, I have slowly familiarized myself with the car, and did my first TrackCross event out at Summit Point. I had the 8 year service done at SSI Motorsports in North Baltimore to include new brakes. So far so good with the car.
However, now that the weather has gotten cold, I have had three instances where the car wants to overheat. Specifically, I will take the car out and within 5-10 minutes of driving, the temperature shoots up to around 228 degrees and I'm told to turn the car off. I pull over, I sit for 5-10 minutes, then resume my drive with no issues and completely normal temperatures.
My car is garage kept. When I start it up, I let it warm up and wait until the RPMs drop to about 800-900 (When I start it, it runs at about 1100-1200 RPM for about 3 minutes). Also, I am not driving in freezing temps (I have sticky tires) so I am only driving in 40 degrees or warmer.
If this problem has been covered here on the forum, I apologize. I did a number of searches and couldn't find anything that addressed this issue. If anyone has any thoughts or experience with a similar issue, I appreciate your assistance and insight.
Do a quick search for COV or change over valve. There are a half dozen or so in the 991, some of which control coolant flow. One could be sticking or faulty, and I wouldn't be too surprised given how few miles there are on the car!
Low miles is not going to be a problem for this car in the future. I've dreamed of owning a 911 since I was 13. I might be back for high mileage problems down the road.
Thanks again for all the tips. It's been too cold to get it over to the shop. I'll be checking all the levels and getting a diagnostic as soon as weather permits. I'll provide an update when I have it.
