Default Cleaning BMC filter?

I have about 20,000 miles on my BMC filter. Are guys buying the cleaning kit or just getting a new filter? Always afraid of over oiling these filters after cleaning.. Hard to know how much oil to use.

Feel free to throw your used BMC filters in my trash can. or read up on this.

BMC filter regeneration

K&N filter cleaning kits are readily found in just about every auto parts store. Same like product and process is used.

they recommend cleaning every 12.5k-15.5k miles. I don’t see a time component, but I seem to recall with the K&N filters it’s every few months. This was easy in a Mustang, with the filter right there when you pop the hood. I never really thought this was a smart idea with the difficulty accessing the air filter in a 991, especially since modern air filters are extremely efficient, it’s not 1990 no more and things actually have improved for OEM.

True. It is crazy that the bumper has to come off but Porsche packed a lot into the rear of the 991. It's actually pretty simple to take the 991 apart. and made it easy to put it back together. I don't think you need to do it any sooner than 12- 15000 miles which is 2-3 yrs for most of us. Sooner if you live in a sandy dusty area

This was kind of my thinking too when considering a BMC filter. the cleaning process (time, products, etc) was just another time consuming extra step in an already cumbersome process. Decided it just made more sense (for me) and less troublesome to simply replace with a new OE filter every few years.

I did not know my car had BMC filters installed when I bought it. My independent mechanic noticed them the first time I took the car to him for service. He sells and installs them and told me he recommended cleaning and oiling them every two years. They were done in June so the next service will be in June 2026. I only put about 5,000 miles a year on the car.

Our cars have MAP sensors not MAFS.

MAFS have a hot wire and when you use oiled filters, if you over oil them, the excess oil sticks to the hot wire of the MAF and fouls them. That is the fear with over oiling filters.

We do not have this fear because we do not have MAFS.

We have MAPS, so zero issues.
