Can the bulb for the headlight be changed by going through the wheel well or do you need to remove the headlight assembly? 17 991.2

nope. remove the bumper and there are a couple 10mm bolts on the bottom side of the headlamp housing. remove those and it'll slide the assembly out.

Just saw a picture of the back of the headlight with the liner removed. It looks like the bulb access panel is easily accessible. I know the bumper needs to come off to remove the headlight . I have done that once before. But I just want to replace the bulb and it does look it is accessible from the wheel well. Just wondering if anyone has done it already before I start getting into it.

hmm, you may be right. I was seeing the panel behind the headlamp housing and assuming it was part of the chassis, but I'm not seeing any metal bits in that area per the parts diagrams. you might be able to get to it be just removing the fender liner!

991.2. I was able to replace my HID bulbs via wheel well liner, the headlight door assembly is accessible.

I recently took my headlights out, and there is space to do the xenon bulbs. No space however to do the H7 (flash/high beam) bulb.
