A few negatives against BMW's (and I've owned a few)"

1- They will most likely depreciate much quicker than a 911
2- When BMW came out with their DFI engines, they were noted for carbon buildup on the intake valves, necessitating removal of the heads and "hulling" to clean off the carbon accumulation every 30,000 miles or so as I recall. Don't know if BMW ever fixed this issue, so research carefully. If you look at a cross section of a 9A1 engine, it is obvious that the fuel injector is designed to spray on the back of the intake valve to keep it clean. I have never heard of anyone having carbon build-up problems on a 911 engine.
3- BMW's understeer like pigs. P-car's understeer also, but not as extreme, and it is a bit easier to remedy than with a BMW.

Lot of hate for BMWs here…I own an M car and quite like it but agree w others that the tactility and feedback of a 911 is far superior. That said if I needed a 4 door car the M3 would be high up on my list. If you don’t need the extra doors the 911 offers a far better driving experience. If you’re big on in-car tech I think BMW is better in that one regard.

The issues with Porsche are the dealers (unfathomably overpriced IME) and the astronomical prices of the cars themselves. We are still in a sort of Porsche bubble.

Prior to purchasing my two current Porsches, I owned two BMW. A '97 840CI (E31) and a 2000 Dinan 7 Badged 740i M-sport. Both fabulous cars. BUT....I moved back to a Porsche with a 2011 Cayenne S and have added a 991.2 GTS. First thing I noticed is the fit and finish and overall quality of the Porsches is superior to the BMW but of course they cost more. I drove my 740 for many years and put 280K miles on it and it still was running beautifully when sold. In those almost 300K miles there was a transmission replacement and timing chain guides replaced. The main issues with the BMW is the window regulators are crap and every one was replaced at least once with one or two being replaced twice. They were like $800 each parts and labor. Also the radiators and expansion tanks are garbage and failed constantly. Plastic parts failing and poor design. So much so that BMW lowered the cost of the part as they were basically needing replacement every 45K miles or so. Engines were very nice and the combination of luxury and performance was very good.
My Cayenne has 180K miles and runs perfect with the only major repair being the timing chain rails at around 150K miles. The Cayenne was the Porsche I needed but a 911 was the Porsche I wanted. Since I have the Cayenne for the needs and utility of an SUV, it finally made sense to get a 911. My favorite car of any I have owned including the two high end BMWs, two Mercedes Benz. By the way I rate the build quality of Mercedes higher than BMW also.

BMWs are cool, too. Still have this one, and I don't think I could ever sell it.

I have a 2019 BMW X3m40i with 112,000 miles on the clock. Not totally bulletproof, cat convertor fail, knock sensor, being two big issues. The converter was covered by warranty. Other than that brakes and tires. Really love the car for an everyday beater and for hauling stuff. A great compliment to my 991.1S. To me BMW has always been a drivers car rather than the cruiser feel of the typical Mercedes. Hoping the X3 goes to 200,000 miles

The 9A is DFI with a central injector.

The engine in the M40i is no slouch.

I really became interested in the 911 in part because of the 1987 PC game 'Test Drive' which allowed the player to pick their car and drive as fast as they can while avoiding radar traps etc. It was a blast, even with an orange monitor

To actually own one was in many ways a childhood fantasy come true. Even more impressive was that it didn't disappoint and was worth the wait Granted, I didn't get a 930 but a 991.2 which I still have and love.

I bought my wife a Cayenne and was amazed at how well it drove, especially on windy roads. I knew right then that if the SUV was that good, I had to have a Porsche sports car. The 911 didn’t disappoint. It’s cliché to even say it, but nothing drives like a Porsche. Just be forewarned: it will ruin you. If you end up with a C2, you will forever be disappointed with how anything else handles a curve. If you end up with a C4, you will forever wonder why other cars that accelerate with similar ferocity are so unlivable (space, creature comforts, adverse weather handling). I can think of cars that that do certain things better than a 911. But I don't know of a car that does everything as well as a 911.
