Keep the 4GTS. It is more fun and effective for windy roads.

Default Perfect car for twisty roads

Hi everyone!

I currently own a 991.1 NA 4GTS with S-PASM, PDCC, bucket seats and DSC module. 48k miles. Pic below. I only use the car for weekend fun: mountain roads, never track. Don’t use it for traveling.

Would a 991.1/2 Turbo be a better car for this purpose? Is it a more stable / fun / grippier car for windy roads? Would you replace the GTS for a Turbo if you were in my shoes? Which one is closer to a GT3 feel?

thanks!

both cars will perform the same at reasonable speeds for public roads.

well I can't speak to those, that's illegal!

the ceiling on either car is likely much higher than you as a driver are capable of. don't take it as a personal dig or anything, this is true for the overwhelming majority of porsche owners.

the turbo will accelerate a hell of a lot harder and be objectively more difficult to control at the edge -- something you are, ideally, never getting even remotely close to on public roads.

the turbo will likely be more fun in street usage simply because of the increased power and the opportunities to experience that frequently. as far as grip is concerned... same tire size, heavier car, and I assume mildly better suspension, so I expect it to be a crapshoot at the very edge of traction which, again, ideally you are not even coming close to approaching.

Can you get a Turbo in a manual?

absolutely agree re limits. I’m not a pro and don’t plan to become one. But was wondering which one will be more fun and allow for extra agility in winding roads.

agility? a turbo is your car plus a lot of power and a little weight.

if agility is what you're after, you're actually better off "downgrading" to a T, or a 718.

Perfect for twisty roads? Something manual and RWD.

I would definitely take the 991.1. It's NA. Manual would be even better. You will be able to push the car closer to its limits on public roads as opposed to the Turbo.

Turbo is great too but just isn't the same experience.

I would keep the .1 GTS for the NA flat 6 wail alone... The turbo cars just don't sound as good. Do you have the option to rent a turbo for a day in your area? Nothing beats a test drive to see what best fits your personal preferences.

Here we go again with the turbo cars don’t sound as good as the NA cars. I’ve listened to lots of comparisons and really can’t tell much difference. My 991.2 with sport exhaust sounds amazing. I owned a 997 with a 3.6L and it sounded terrible with the stock exhaust. Ended up putting a Fabspeed Maxflo muffler to make it sound like a Porsche.

Anything with wheels! I've had cars ranging from $3k to $500k out on the dragon. And it's honestly fun all the time. Getting out there and in a good mood is more important that your wheels. (Believe it or not, a RWD only Model 3 was about as fun as anything on the dragon. Throw it into the corner, hit the understeer, then pop off the throttle to get lift off and regen oversteer at once, then back on the throttle to get out of the corner. :-D )

The turbo is a GT car, a highway cruiser. They are all wheel drive, have super soft suspensions, and insane (unusable) speed on twisty back roads.@asellus said it best, get a Carrera T if twisty backroads is your intended use. My air cooled cars, grossly underpowered by today’s standards, are wayyyyy more fun on twisty backroads than any of my other modern cars and its not even close. Even my 997 GT3 is so powerful for twisty, hilly, PA backroads I can probably drive that car 3/10.

Turbos are great and capable cars but they are point and shoot. If you’re commuting 60 miles on the highway the turbo wins hands down.

One of my favorite twisty road cars was a 2001 Toyota Echo. I put coilovers, big sway bars , sticky tires and it only weighed 1900 lbs. one of the most fun cars I have ever owned. I’d say go with lightweight Cayman .

The answer will always be whichever car weighs less.
