Good morning everybody a simple question when you’re checking, the current level on a 991.2 do you check it when the engine is stone cold or hot to get an accurate reading on the little red ball between minimum and maximum

This is it cold should I add fluid or should I let a heat up and let the water expand to get in more accurate reading

Never check while hot. When cold, the ideal measurement would be with that little red floater ball in the middle of the circle or a little closer to the bottom ("max"). Simple as that. And make sure your car is on level ground.

OK thank you I really appreciate that. I kind of thought that but it wasn’t sure and I’m doing it right now. I’m adding distilled water and Porsche freeze. The engine is cold I just wanna thank you. Have a great day take care.

yeah if you ever try and take the rad cap off on older systems or the reservoir cap off on newer systems like the 991 while the engine is hot you will instantly realize your mistake. hot coolant under pressure is usually at a higher temperature than boiling water. if you are lucky the coolant will only spray around your engine compartment until all of the pressure is released, probably at least a quart. if you are unlucky you will have some serious burns to remember for a long time.

When I first bought my 2015 Targa 4s I had no idea the overflow pressure tank had a minor leak and the 911 drove just fine and did not alert until the tank was a quart low on coolant. You can run yourself crazy trying to keep the float ball at a certain level though a proper working system should stay constant at a certain temperature…..

it is so easy on cars where you can see the reservoir in the engine bay, there's a cold mark and a hot mark, you just keep it in between. on a 991 you really don't have to do anything unless the ball is on low, and then see how much you have to add to bring up to the middle point. if you are adding a quart then either the cooling system wasn't properly burped last time there was a repair on it and the air finally came out or you simply have leak somewhere. in most cases it will be a crack in the plastic reservoir or the water pump.

You can unscrew the coolant cap when engine temp decreases to 140F per Porsche manual.

Good morning hope everybody’s having a wonderful Sunday. Looks like the weather’s gonna be good here on the east, and I want to thank everybody for their help with the coolant thread. I read the manual. I figured it out and just got done, adding distilled water and coolant and a little red ball is in the middle so I just wanna thank everybody again for the valuable information, have great day!
